Question about the Ionos

today i visited two LBS and again looked at every helmet in question and i am leaning toward the Ionos.

but there is one thing about it that bothers me. on the front bottom part of the helmet there is a plastic "brow" glued right above the eye line.

in an event of a face plant this brow it seems will go like a knife into my forehead. does that not bother you ?

i just want my helmet with foam on the inside and plastic on the outside. i don't want any plastic "ribs" perpendicular to the surface of my head.

understand what i am saying ?

walie 05-27-10 11:56 PM

then look for another helmet?

colombo357 05-28-10 01:39 AM

You could hollow out a watermelon and put that over your head. I think that's how raw foodists do it.

botto 05-28-10 01:50 AM

i have no clue what the OP is referring to.

Solorouleur 05-28-10 03:18 AM

I am staring at my Ionos right now, and the only thing I can see that is similar to what you are describing is the plastic piece that goes along the front third of the helmet on the bottom...

If you hit hard enough to make that go like a knife into your head, you are pretty much done anyways...

Wouldn't the foam that the helmet is made of have to completely disintegrate for that to happen? Common sense would dictate that that is highly unlikely...

pdedes 05-28-10 04:47 AM

i'd call you an idiot, but i'm not allowed

leooooo 05-28-10 06:01 AM

lol, I can't wait to go home and check out my helmet in person.
Don't remember having a machete on my helmet and from the pictures online, I haven't a clue about what you're talking about.

Sounds like a visor of some sort. How often do people do faceplants ? I suggest the tuck & roll for minimal injury.

Unless I am mistaken (which is entirely possible), it is not a visor, but the Ionos has a plastic piece that is fastened to the bottom for the foam on the front third of the helmet bottom, so it is not raw foam exposed but instead covered with plastic. The back two thirds are raw foam that is exposed, so maybe it is to prevent chaffing?

FlashBazbo 05-28-10 08:40 AM

I would worry more about the explosive bolts that release the helmet liner in the event of fire.

GirlAnachronism 05-28-10 08:46 AM

Yeah, I have an Ionos too and I cannot for the life of me figure out what you're talking about. Love the helmet though!

cuattop 05-28-10 12:04 PM

Didn't seem to be an issue with Lance's recent face plant.

JRonaTrek 05-28-10 12:10 PM

arent those for wind purposes? to make you go faster????just kidding.

If you faceplant, the helmet will protect your brain from popping out of your skull, i think its meant to prevent you from becoming a vegetable if a serious head injury happens.

I wouldn't get it, that might seriously kill you when it slices through your head and if we lose you the average IQ of the worlds population will surely drop a few points.

is there a video of that ?

Oh noes! A fatal design flaw from Giro! You're the first person to call attention to it! I'm predicting massive recalls.

As I recall, I don't remember seeing a scratch on Lance's helmet, and I haven't heard what he actually hit, but I don't think he did that to his face by hitting it on the ground.

some bright people like you loaded a gun with a cigarette butt and shot their friend with it for fun - the cigarette butt went straight through his heart killing him.

my friend in college could throw a paper thin plastic metro card ( about 1/5 as thin as a credit card ) into a wall and it would stick in it. it would go in pretty deep too.

if a cigarette butt can go halfway through your body and a metrocard can go into a wall i don't see why that plastic piece on the helmet ( which is about 20 times stronger than a metrocard and about 1,000 times stronger than a cigarette butt ) can't go into your head.

if Toyota can't design a floor mat what makes you think Giro can design a helmet.

did i really have to tell you that idiots are everywhere ? just look what is happening to the the world today.

CrimsonKarter21 05-30-10 01:17 PM

great comparison.
Toyota specializes in the floormat-making industry
Giro specializes in the helmet making industry, which is remarkably similar to a college student throwing a piece of paper into a wall.

my suggestion, cover everything in your apartment/house in cotton wool, better yet - tin foil.

portland376 05-30-10 01:23 PM

Rudy Project makes a better helmet anyways. I've never heard any complaints of potentially impaled brain from those using a Rudy.

GM made cars for 100 years and they couldn't get a single one right. What makes Giro so special ?

When some moron ends up with his forehead slit by that thing there is only about 1% probability that he will even make the connection with the poor design. And if he does figure it out and goes to court with it there is 1% probability that he will be able to present a more convincing case than Giro's lawyers.
