Proper bike shorts fit
I' just bought my first pair of bike shorts. Not sure what the proper fit should be. I bought some medium specialized sport shorts. The problem (i think) is that the pad doesn't hug my back side. It kinda just pokes straight out from the back. Enough so that when I try to mount my bike it gets caught on the nose of my seat. question, should I get small or just deal with this pair?

Also, how tall are you?
For the record, I'm 5'9", weight 145lbs, and wear a small. Though all shorts fit differently so I'm not sure how much that helps.

I'm 5'7" and 168lbs. I use Med and large depending on the brand! but this sounds more like a poor design low quality shorts, b/c nothing pokes out the back of my shorts or bibs!

there are two important parts to the shorts... one is obviously waist size and the other is the quad size.
how's it feel around the waist? snug? loose?

Around the waist it feels snug. Everywhere else it feels like a good fit. Not loose at all. It's just the pad that seems to be to stiff or too big/long.

for me, depending on brand, snug around the waist and snug around the quads, but not constricting.
I'm beginning to think maybe it's just the padding...

Wow, sounds like my pair. The fit is too loose. My shorts are some cheap brand so I'm just going to wear them till I get some new kit, but when I do get new shorts they'll be tighter.

you can tell if they fit or not, if they feel tight around the belly or tight around the legs there are too small! if your junk is moving around when you're riding they're too big!!

Does the penis dangle freely or is it restrained? The latter is required for proper fit, preventing chafing and discomfort.
Is it possible that you just need to pull the shorts higher?

yeah, the ass end is supposed to sit higher on the waist than the belly side.

The stiffness of. the pad kinda keeps it straight. That's why it pokes out the back. There's space to move cause the bottom of the pad doesn't touch me, kinda forms like an umbrella but I was thinking it was cause it was new and the pad just molds to your shape with use. Sounds like just a bad design.

I'll try a diff brand and see how those fit. Prob try it in small as well. Thanks for the response, at least I know that its not a normal fit.

Sounds like simply too thick a pad. These useless PI shorts I have sitting in a bin have the diaper effect as well.

I buy my shorts from the guy that makes them. The first time I tried on a pair of his shorts, I grabed my usual size. He told me they were a size too big. He said that the shorts should fit tight. They should grip the legs very tightly. This helped me a lot when using leg warmers. The leg warmers don't slip down to my knees anymore.
