Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lessons Learned Today....

It stormed like crazy last night and washed all kinds of junk onto the road. I was about 8 miles into my 27 mile ride when I heard something that sounded like the brakes were rubbing on the front rim. I glanced while I was riding and could see clearance between the pads and the rim. Then i noticed something else on the tire....

Lessons Learned:

1. Goat head thorns suck!. If you get them in your tire and don't have a spare, LEAVE THE THORN IN THERE... or else if you take it out, like I did, air escapes like a bat out of hell.

2. Always carry more spares than you need. I got 3 of those stupid thorns in my front tire and one in my rear tire. It would have been nice to have 2 spare tubes with me. Now I know.

3. Mountain Bike shoes make walking 2 miles with your bike back home manageable.

The only upside is now I have an excuse (albeit a super lame one) to buy some green tires to match my bike.

Also, I'm glad I was only 2 miles from home and not 10 (the furthest point away from my house on my ride).

Anyone else learn something today from their stupidity/ignorance?
