I agree that we all look dumb in tights though. I found the whole exchange pretty funny but I think the smoking part is just plain stupid. I won't apologize for that. Jeez, if the guy was over there humping a goat and we made fun of him, there would still be somebody on here calling me elitist. That's why I love good old BF.

I smoked while biking once. The ash went into my eye. It was glorious.

Nimitz87 07-01-10 11:00 PM

I knew a Marine who would be smoking before the 3 mile PFT run, stop half way and light up again and then be smoking while waiting for everyone to finish he ran it in something like 16 minutes.

+1, I'm by no means a "Smoker" but along tour, we would have a cigarette whenever we stopped. It just gave us something to do.

Now, would I stop on a Hill just to light up? No thank you. Nor would I start talking smack back to people clearly in better shape than I. At least not til I put the cig out. Lol

Lycra is stupid looking.

univox 07-02-10 11:35 AM

Smoking with a bit of cycling still beats smoking and being sedentary.

Besides, the smoking is probably no worse for you than any of this fake ass energy supplements that people take while riding.

Dan The Man 07-02-10 11:49 AM

Smokers I would imagine.

riding a bike is pretty simple, and supposedly more efficient than walking. Using your knowledge the only people who should smoke should be sitting down. Its funny, some people could chew gum and walk at the same time.

Actually cigarettes are a huge waste of money, they just taste bad and you don't get anything (e.g. a high) in return.... if you're gonna buy something to smoke at least make it worth it, I say.

(former smoker myself, quit about a year go)

About fifteen years ago, I went out to Moab to do some slickrock mountain biking.

My friends and I were all geared up in front suspension bikes (very rare for the time), jerseys, clipless pedals etc. We found (what we thought was) a trecherous trail and set off thinking we were definitive hardman.

At the top of a particularly technical section, we encountered a (no joke) ~70 year old local in friggen golf pants and mall walkers on a Schwinn Varsity with a cigarette stuck to his lower lip. Just riding along. Out in the desert. At the top of a giant rocky climb. On a 1975 Schwinn road bike with aux brake levers for the flats. Wearing (I repeat) golfing pants with a crease.

He kind of giggled at us as we struggled past.

Seriously though, who goes out to exercise and takes smoke breaks?

I was on a fast club ride last year where one of the riders didn't take smoke breaks, he smoked while he was riding in the paceline!

I think its even better when you see a runner (running for the sole purpose of exercise) smoking during their run.

One of our rituals for PFTs in the Marine Corps was to light up at the start of the 3 mile run, light up another at the halfway point, then light up again at the finish, so all the fat-body, non-running, non-smokers who came in behind us could have a nice trail of smoke to find their way to the finish. :D

I figure that sugar and all of its artificial replacements (especially HFC) has probably done more damage to my body than smoking ever did.

Love it. sounds like a Cutter from the movie Breaking Away. The only dif is that cutters might kick your ass if they knew what facebook was and saw you using it!

The greatest invention is Nicotine gum. Fruit Chill is my favorite.

Never was a smoker except at a bar with drinks occasionally. Use to dip to tobacco in high school then later in life when golfing. Nicotine is a great substance, when its not in a tobacco based product and in moderation. Nicotine does not cause cancer.

I throw in low dose 2mg piece before or during a ride and it gets me snapping. In the am with coffee perhaps, maybe after a meal, definitely at neighborhood poker game after a couple of beers. Just delightful I say:)

Simply delightful.....live and let live.
