Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Really, who does this?

Riding with a group yesterday to get some training in and we are warming up on our regular path through this park. The week before we see this older guy on a comfort bike going up a tiny hill. He stops, gets off his bike, pulls out a cigarette, lights it up and sits there. We see the same dude this week and he's getting ready to do the same thing.

One of the guys behind me says, "hey, it's the guy from last week with the cigarette, remember that?" I said, "yeah, that was hilarious."

We ride by the guy and he goes "what's hilarious is a bunch of guys in tight." We laughed our asses off. Didn't realize he'd heard us talking about him. Seriously though, who goes out to exercise and takes smoke breaks?

Maybe his objective was to ride to the park for a smoke. Some people ride to the coffee shof for coffee, what's the difference? Some to the store for groceries, some to the beach for a swim. Not everybody rides a bike for the sole purpose of training.

Like cycling, smoking can be addicting.

I have a friend who did a hilly century in jeans and stopped for smoke breaks along the way. He was updating Facebook all day and I was just dumbfounded.

I was on a fun ride, a century, earlier this year and passed another rider about 50 miles in riding along having a smoke. I thought it was a bit odd.

As for your guy, he probably told his wife he quit...

I do it now, unfortunately. When I bicycle I go for distance rather then speed, sometimes the urge hits.

+1 and that he quit drinking. So he was probably taking a smoke break on his way to the bar. But his wife is quite proud of him taking up exercising though.

No too bad after doing the humpty dance, either...

It was the ever increasing addiction and obvious loss of pulmonary function that caused me to quit. I've had a few bad habits but cigarettes were an absolute total addiction for me. It's been over 20 years but I'll still get this crushing want for one every so often.

Why do you assume he is exercising? He may be using his bicycle for this thing called "transportation" and is simply taking a smoke break much as a cager would roll the window down and smoke as he drives.

No need to light up here--there's plenty of pollutants included in the air at no extra cost.

One of the coaches at my junior high would go for a bike ride after school everyday while smoking his pipe.

+1 I find it amusing that so many recreational cyclists forget that a bicycle is also a means of transportation.

Bikes: Nothing.. last bike stolen

I think its even better when you see a runner (running for the sole purpose of exercise) smoking during their run.
