Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I specifically think road cycling/racing.

Mountain Biking
Going for a "Bike Ride" with your family
Commuting to work
Cyclecross
Etc.

Are all what I would consider first tier terms for those related activities. If I hear from someone "I like to cycle" or "I'm a cyclist" right or wrong I assume they're talking about wearing spandex and dodging cars.

And OP, Did you really think you would get any non Inane/Silly Comments with that thread title?

It's like waiving a red flag in front of a bull, throwing chum in the ocean around sharks. We cannot resist bait like that.

Cycling = riding a bicycle.

Why do you ask? What do you think of when you hear the word "cycling"?

I gave a perfectly serious, non-funny answer...I can't help it that demons follow me around and tempt me. Forgive them lord, they know not what they do.

Then I think, "What a ridiculous question! Only a mental midget would be pondering such an inane question."

This must be a psychology experiment.
Or marketing research.
Or a parody thread (I guess I missed the original one).

Or Bostongarden is really, really bored.

You certainly would not want to end a sentence with a preposition on Bike Forums. At least the OP was able to avoid that trap for the unwary.

Cycling for me is riding a road bike with a purpose, ie: training, touring, racing, group rides, etc.

Downhill, Freeride etc, all fall under Mountain Biking.

Everything else is "riding a bike".

But that is just my interpretation.
