Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I picked up a Madone 4.5 two weeks ago. It's been over 20 years since I've ridden seriously and I'm impressed with the new technology over my old 80's vintage CrMo Campy Super Record equipped bike. I have a little over 200 miles on it so far and I'm very happy. I did have the LBS change out the stock wheels for some 2009 Race X Lites since they made a deal on them. That took the weight down to 17-1/4 lbs.

It's a little thing, but what really sold me on the Madone was the Duotrap sensor mount in the frame.

I did my first group ride last weekend and was very happy with how the bike and my 43 yo body held up. Unfortunately after 51 miles at about 21.5 mph avg, my legs gave up and I had to go the last 9 miles on my own. I still ended up at home at the 60 mile mark with a 19.9 mph avg. Sure it's not a Dura Ace or Sram Red equipped bike like pretty much all the other bikes in the group, but I never had a shift problem or any other bike problems.

EDIT: Unfortunately I bought a better scale and the bike was more like 18-1/2 lbs as described above.

In that price range, I'd love to test ride a Kuota Kharma. I like the looks, but don't know anything of the ride quality.
