Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trek decals

I'm having my 2002 Trek 2300 powdercoated. I want to change color, but would like to replace a few of the Trek decals on bike. Does anyone know of a source?

Any reputable bike painter should be able to get them. Also, any Trek dealer.

I wanted new Bontrager (owned by Trek) decals for my Race Lites. I went to one dealer and he called their distributor while I was there, only to be told they couldn't be gotten. Second shop told me they would be $80. For decals? I think not. 3rd shop listened to my hard luck story, told me they would be $20 and 2 weeks. I left thinking "we'll see". 2 weeks later they came in. Point is, Trek dosn't really want to pass these things out willy nilly. But they can be gotten.

I am switching from Klein to Trek due to sizing issues. It's difficult for me to switch from Klein's beautiful, no-decal paint jobs to Trek's UGLY paint jobs.

I considered removing the decals, period.

I also might be interested in powdercoating - how much $?

A friend has just started a powdercoating business in Augusta Ga. Going to powdercoat my frame for cost of material. Don't really know amount.

What exactly is powdercoating? Any pics of it. My brother is rather talented with the airbrush. I just got a Trek 2100, and we are talking about repainting it with some airbrushing. Anyone know of any sites that show cool custom paint on bikes? I did some searching but haven't had a lot of luck...

I might add that the best work I've seen is done by Dean Cannard at Acme Paint in Portland Oregon. He doesn't have a site and is difficult to get a hold of, but his work is incredible. Samples of which can be seen here:

Powder coating is not paint. An electric charge is applied to the frame, and opposite charge goes on a sprayer that sprays plastic/lacquer particles on the surface. The frame is then baked, and the particles melt and fuse together. Nice shiny coat and very tough to scratch. It also seals decals and is enviromentally friendly because no solvents are used.
