Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Kool Stop/Shimano 105

Hi,
I ride my bike with Mavic Classic rims (#period) and Shimano 105 calipers. I run Shimano Ceramic rims pads with a not very good result.
I am thinking of the slightly rounded Kool Stop pads, aka MTB Pads in green compound for ceramics.
Do you know if they fit the 105 road calipers? Suggestions?
Thanks.

They should fit. Why the ceramic though? Kool Stop Salmons would be my recommendation.

Hi, Blackdays,
Thanks for your answer.
Do you base your opinion on direct experience when it comes to the clearance issues? I thought of the specific for ceramic rims compound because of Kool Stop recommendations.
Your concerns, please.

I don't think his response had anything to do with clearance...it has to do with using pads meant for ceramic rims on non-ceramic rims...unless your "Mavic Classic" rims have a ceramic braking surface.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering.

Sorry for the mess. I mixed both concepts. My Mavic Classics SSC feature the ceramic braking surface. I guess that I cannot use the salmon pads with them.
I asked for the use of the rounded pads with the attachmet issues to the 105 caliper in mind.
Hope to have clarified.
Thanks again.

Why wouldn't you just buy the road version of the green ceramic-specific Kool Stop pads? I have some and they fit Shimano road brakes made within the last 13 years.

Hi,
I didn't decide which one to buy. Just hearing opinions. I thought that the bigger surface pads would increase the braking power. my bike is a road-to-commuter frame with riser bars and a mtb levers/road brakes combo. It is not very powerful and I thought of improving its performances by swapping the pads.
Regards.

they don't fit if you have narrow brake tracks. I've tried them. The swiss stops fit and work much better. I gave up on the shimano pads. The reason being isthat every time I checked the pads, there was aluminum shavings in them.....not good.

hi,
Thanks for your answer. My bike is a regular road frame with Shimano 105 brakes. I guess that they are not track brakes. I will check the Swiss anyway.
Thanks.

Not track brakes. IF the brake tracks are narrow, they won't fit. I spent over an hour trying to get these to fit a couple years back, and no matter what I did, they would not fir right. Theyre too wide.
