Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well.. here is some info directly from the website..

At La Vuelta, riders divide themselves into three pelotons based on the pace they prefer to ride. Group A is for the hammerheads, and travels at average speeds of more than 20 mph. Group B averages 18 mph. Group C moves at a more leisurely 15 mph.
So you'll need to determine which one of these paces you are able to sustain.

Total elevation gain for all three days is approximately 13,000 feet. Expect all kinds of terrain, from flats to rolling hills to climbs. The majority of the climbs are slow and steady, but there are also a few short pitches that are quite steep (you’ll know them when you see them).
13k feet, not 8k feet. Again, this is all directly form the website: https://www.vueltapr.com/The_Tour/Overview

@shovlhd I am proud to say that I have never owned a beer bong. Used one, yes but those days have long since been left behind. I am also happy to say that I still have all of my hair, although I do piss my bald friends off because I clip it all off. Apparently, if you have hair, you are supposed to wear it proudly. Thanks for the advice

@phops Thank you. That will be determined by the amount and type of training I can devote the most time to.

@obie Thank you for the advice and especially the encouragement. Unfortunately, my resources wont allow a recon trip but I do have two very close friends that have done the ride twice and I am picking their brains for advice as well. Some might say I am over-thinking it but I have never used a training plan. I have always just ridden for the pleasure and the mental clarity that comes from it yet I never really enjoyed a mellow pace. Not comparing myself by any stretch of the imagination, but it's like Lance says, "Every time I suffer I am a better man because of it." I just don't want to suffer on this ride.

@merlin Thank you, this helps tremendously.

I've asked the Vuelta organizers about those average speeds, and they assure me they are real averages, not simply the typical pace on flats. 20mph average over a long ride like that is freaking fast, at least to me.

Hadn't seen that. Interesting. I mentioned the 8k feet of climbing because that was the announced amount last year. https://www.vueltapr.com/Blog/view/80...bing_NOT_18000. I went and added up the elevation gain from the posted routes on MapMyRide for 2011 and it comes out to 5981 feet. Weird...
