Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm probably just really gullible, but what makes you think that this is a scam?

(I'm not saying it isn't, or it is. I just can't tell)

What tells me scam is that the seller is representing that they run a bike shop, "just got this as a trade-in," but reports the weight as "15 pounds on my bathroom scale."

I'm shocked, shocked to hear that folks are using craigslist for scams.

The scam is that it doesn't exist. You send the money (through a money order or other such process), they disappear.

Something else to watch for is the multiple-location listings. Mostly, Craigslist is for local listings, and if you're in one city advertising a bike in another city, you generally want to point that out to the customers if it's a legitimate deal.

The scam is a seller on CL will find a high end listing on ebay and take the photos and description and sell it as if they own it..

You usually get some lame excuse that they are out of town on business but if you sent a deposit they will hold the bike for you.. Normally this happens with expensive bikes and it is being sold for 1/2 its actual value..

I actually had someone steal my pictures and description and list the bike on eBay before. What was really nice was that my listing hadn't even ended yet. Because of that people were afraid to bid on my auction because they saw where it was listed twice. The scammer ended up costing me about a grand since the bike sold for much less than it should have.

Contact ebay. They'll take down the offending listing within a day. This happened to me once selling some very expensive speakers.

I did but it was already on the final day so it didn't help all that much.

Scammer filter: contact the "seller" and ask her/him to send a specific pic, e.g. "can you take a close-up of the cassette and send it or include it in the ad?".
