Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What Road Bike Tire Do You Use?

Hey Everyone! Just wondering what road bike tire do you use? How has it handled? Is it light? Do you like the overall perfomance? Have you had many flats? What kind of road to you ride on?

I'm looking for a tire for my Trek 1000... I'll be riding on mostly dry pavement, maybe some rough gravel and once in a while wet road. I'm looking for a durable tire. Something in the price range of 50 - 75 US for a pair... so 25-32 each.

I'm looking at the Gatorskin tire, or the Vittoria Rubino Pro III. Let me know what you think and any suggestions. Thanks!!!

I love my Vittoria Rubino Pro's, you find them on ebay for ~ 60 a set. Excellent flat protection, fabulous handling, however they are also very stiff, or firm. I run gators on my rainy day ride, they are a softer ride, and IMHO do not handle as well, nor is the flat protection as good.

Rubino Pros will be great, with the gravel and all.

I use Michelin Krylion Carbons, but I'm not sure I'd use them in gravel.

On my tubular wheels I have a set of Challenge Vulcanos, and on my clinchers I usually run a set of Veloflex Blacks.

On one bike: Hutchinson Fusion3 tubeless, and on the other Fusion2 ultra. Both are very nice tires, but the tubeless are really nice on our terrible roads, not having to worry about pinch flats is a real bonus

Vredestien. It depends on the application, but they're some of my favorites; long lasting, good grip all along the lineup, and good puncture protection.

I'm not happy with the Gatorskins. They're getting more flats than any other tire I've had. Although I got insignificant cracks on my Rubino Pros, I didn't have any real problems with them.
