Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Awesome post, thanks for sharing.

Try this stuff, comes in many sizes. Kinda pricey though, you might do just as well with a non-stick gauze pad.

the current BF trend of hating on paragraphs is boring.

anyone who races knows that masters events are faster then most 4/5.

it is possible to complete your first race, not crash and not get dropped. later.

Excellent story. I don't mind the length when it is well written.

Finally a post worth reading. Well done on finishing. You beat a bunch of them even after crashing? Seems like you belong with the Masters already. Stay right where you are. You look tough enough to endure a few boo boo's!!

It doesn't sound that way from what he wrote:

"The pack passed me about three laps later. I was not depressed as I was rolling again at 24 mph. I caught a few stragglers and saw a few riders drop out before the finish. I rode on and in confusion, managed to ride an extra lap to make sure I finished completely."

It seems to me that he passed back a few people from the pack that had lapped him, after they dropped off because they weren't in contention for the sprint. Most serious/experienced racers don't feel the need to finish and/or sprint to the line if they are well out of contention.

great post!
I enjoyed the read and may see you out on the lakefront one day...I sometimes tie up my sailboat at the city dock and am amazed at all of the bike I see on the lakefront. I live in Lafayette and didn't know there were races here. Do you know who puts them on?

True. However, most folks in their first race like to finish if the opportunity presents itself

Yes and I didn't mean to imply there was anything wrong with the OP for finishing, just commenting on the part about possibly beating some of the guys that dropped out at the end because they weren't sprinting.

Thanks for all the comments!

The bike is fine, it suffered a little abrasion on one shifter and one skewer. Good advice on the bandaging, will keep that in mind. Yes, I shaved the legs in advance and I fully understand why that is important.

I have located some local rides that are very brisk and will keep up with them.

I "lost" the front wheel by turning in to hard it made the turn to tight for the wheel to hold. It had rained earlier in the day but was drying up. I consider it to be a jugement error.

Again, thanks for reading. I'll do my best to keep you entertained. I will be finishing the year riding hard and looking forward to full year of racing next year.

You have to remember that in a master's catagory there are guys who started racing in their teens and NEVER stopped. These guys have raced at a high level for many years. Most cat 5's are the newest of the new or at least those that have taken some time off - you have a much better chance against the 5's.

In addition, most guys who are still racing @ age 40+ are talented at it. That's one reason why they're still doing it. Most. I suck at the sport, always have, now I just suck harder. I took up racing to test my limits, they were always tested, I have always struggled at racing, and I've had a few moments, but VERY few.

I hate age graded racing. When I was a Junior, I was racing against the likes of George Hincapie. A young but very fast George Hincapie! I couldn't wait to get in to the Senior ranks, where it was categorized on ability. There are some riders who are rather young, or somewhat old, but still pretty damn fast! Jumping in to racing in either the Junior or Masters category is definitely not taking the easy way.
