I think that, the Vector by MetriGear, priced at 699.99 would be a hot seller. I really think that 700 is the sweet spot for power meters because it is right at the price where using the money to get another bike or new wheels seems impractical. At 700 it will sell in droves.
Oh, but this Look thing is doomed to fail. |

I did not know about the calibration can only be done by Quarq, that seems silly. Why not connect the quarq to a USB and have them calibrate it remotely. This is on the top of my wish list, a Quarq PM. If I told my kids to stop going to gymnastics for a couple of months.....
as for cost, i have seen quarqs go on sale on ebay for $1300. not common, but they do happen |

i think someone in the 33 has actually calibrated his quarq using an elaborate but not too difficult procedure. check the PM debate that went on in late May & you might find the instructions.

You can calibrate the quarq using quarqd. It's not just very user friendly at the moment.

Yeah- I had high hoped for Metrigear as well. I think they are probably trying to sell the technology to another Company, as they need more time and money to get these power meters working. I have a feeling the Eurobike show was more an attempt to entice investors, versus trying to entice consumers at that point.

look at their blog & twitter & see how they are holding up. the used to put up 2-3 blog entries per month, and even more tweets on their twitter page. now look at them, the last few tweets are from Aug 20, June 18th, May 31st, and May 4th, and the last blog is from June 18th. chances are, they are running low on seed money

I hope this is not true. I would love more competition in the power meter market. I feel like they charge such high prices because they know that customers have little alternatives. I guess for now I will have to keep saving for a Quarq. |

I hate to admit it, but Pcad was right. Metrigear is vaporware at this point.

P.S. Any product, announced by any company, is friggin utter, complete total VAPORWARE until it is in your hot little idiot hands. Get a grip on this basic fact, or suffer the consequences in the future. Your move poindexter. |

Mr. Pcad sir, um, with respect to Duke Nukem (perhaps gamers' poster child of vaporware), I think you meant that you couldn't give a you know what.

My view is totally skewed by confirmation bias, but the number of cyclists I know with power meters almost wholly overlaps with the number of people I know that would see the d at the end of quarq and immediately start thinking ./configure; make; make install
I was going to make a joke comment about running a server on your bike, but then found out that quarkd is actually built from source code. So, the ./configure ; make ; make install probably is correct. from http://opensource.quarq.us/quarqd/ quarqd is a daemon for communicating with an Ant device and reading Ant+Sport data. Data is communicated over a network socket. |

Yeah, the weight penalty *might* only be 140 grams (if you're using Keo's cheapest pedal), and in reality the weight penalty will probably be more than a Ptap hub and it's three times the cost.
I had high hopes for metrigear, but I'm glad I got my Quarq. |

I think its likely Metrigear already sold, or licensed, anything they had in the way of trade secrets or patentable ideas to Look Polar, and they're done. |

Ever since they announced that it wasn't going to be speedplay based, it appeared they were doomed. I think the speedplay folks determined Metrigear wasn't commercially viable.

Agree with overpriced, and way under-compatible. Not having ANT+ is ridiculous, but of course Look wouldn't need Polar at all if they went ANT+.
I have a hard time understanding how they could make these things this heavy though. I guess they may be using depleted uranium to protect against pedal strikes in corners. That stuff is pretty dense. Regarding pedal strikes: I hit my pedals 4 times in the crits this weekend. No crashes (never have from a strike). My pedals have always been machined by the road to a flat surface that's coincident with my lean angle. Pole-vaulting off my power meter once/crit is somewhat unattractive to me... and that goes for crank-based as well, but to a lesser extent. |

I'm surprised this is getting more press than the new crank based Power2Max, which would bring crank based nearly down to the cost of a PT. Just like with the Metrigear Product, it has yet to make it to market, but they say they're just waiting on vendors before they move to full scale production
Power2max would be nice at $890. |
