Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What if Fred is your destiny?

So you buy the fancy carbon bike with the minimum standard 105 groupset. Your goal is to shed X number of pounds, achieve Y average speed, and be able to ride Z number of miles. What if you fall short of any of your goals in the length of time you allotted yourself? What if you overestimate your abilities and discipline? What if the practical realities of life interfere with your plans? Will you give up cycling? Or will you accept your destiny and gladly join in the multitudinous parade of Freds?

It's best not to set any goals, other than to look cool sporting your helmet mirror.

I thought the procedure was well known. You find someone slower and fatter than you, preferrably with a better bike than you. Then you mercilessly abuse his fredness until he is a quivering mess.

Maybe to you, though it is probably still a challenge finding a suitable mark.

Helmet mirrors are uncool. All proper Freds spring for the Take-a-Look

I try not to think about the "what if's". When it comes right down to it, the only people who are unsuccessful in life are the ones who have set goals for themselves.

Cervelo-man is well traveled.

That was Monaco. Who knows where he'll turn up next? Or what kit he'll be wearing?

Who can say he's not envious of Cervelo man. Great bike, travelling all over the world to glamourous locations and riding his bike. He's probably really fit too.

It's a shame that this road cycling board has to be such a joke. There's so much good info on here but you have to weed through all the idiots constantly talking about fredliness. Isn't there an off topic subforum for this?

That's brilliant! We need a Fred subforum. We need a trainer subforum, too, for people who like indoor cycling.
