The reasons for most on here if the truth be known:

Vanity
Tradition.
Acceptance.
Posing.
Wound clean up. Whatever, but ok.
Cooler. Some merit.
Massage. Valid reason
Aero. Get real.
Chicks dig it. Not all. Maybe it reminds them of an "experimental" phase.

The truth is more elusive. You missed the number 1 reason... it is the easiest part of racing. Everything else about racing is very hard to do. I am also relieved that you approved some of the reasons and gave clarity to others.:roflmao2:

I competed in masters track nationals last week and can report that i did not see any hairy legs on the podium for men or women and in fact, no hairy legs at all. Disclaimer, I did not inspect everyone except for the women.:D

Disagree, massages were never an issue before I made the jump to shaving.

Still isn't for back...

Report your findings after your first successful completion; one in which you don't get dropped.

Nothing to do with getting dropped, it's the going in circles 30+ times. Seems very redneckish, nascar to me, which I can't stand to watch. *shrug*. When I run a marathon, it's all continuous unique terrain, I specifically avoid the double lasso ones. Training for those the most loops I usually do, triple 9 milers, ugggh super mindnumbing.

But century rides aren't very competitive, or timed, and it's kind of meh.

Do you race? If so do you shave your legs? Why?
If You do not race, do you shave your legs? If so why.

You've been a member here since 2005 and you want to know why cyclists shave their legs? You haven't been paying attention in class!

Do you consider the Kentucky Derby to be "redneckish" too? (I can see why people would allude criteriums to NASCAR)

You're being utterly ignorant here. Criterium's might not be fun to watch, but don't knock it till you've tried it.

Horse racing? I don't follow it, no interest, never have.

I plan to, it's on my rough horizon for spring as Marathon season winds down for the warmer months. Register for CAT5 license, got a couple in the area. I figure first I'll hang (or try to hang) on the back of the pack and see first hand how/when the attacks work. If it's fun, and it's a challenge I want to pursue, I may keep with it.

That much I can guarantee.

Really? Ask your massage therapist. In the mean time. Enjoy your bliss.

The only other reason to add to the list is embrocation.

Laser hair removal is better. Or waxing, at the very least.

Define irony: A guy who runs marathons thinks racing a crit would be boring.

I do ride hard, fast, and sometimes with training groups. Accidents happen. I also climb and descend mountains hitting 30-50mph on a weekly basis. I have crashed and slid across the pavement at 30mph. Bandages can adhere to smooth flesh... not the gorilla coat I would have otherwise. Also lower chance of infection due to dirt trapped by hair.

It feels good in hot weather.
Legs and arms show muscle definition better. Gotten several compliments on muscular legs since shaving... the smooth shaved aspect is really only pointed out and ribbed by people who knew me prior.

I'm sorry, this is hilarious

Sometimes I overlook the obvious. Good catch.

racing a crit is not the same as watching a nascar race. I can also assure you that driving in a nascar race is a lot more exciting than watching it. Racing a crit is a lot more exciting than watching one. A marathon is mind numbing anyway you cut it, challenging yes, but not terribly exciting or dangerous. You can't compare one to a crit either, the only thing they share in common is that it's a race.

I know the common reasons, wound, vanity etc. Really I was more interested if a lot of non racers shave, and if so why ?

Infection rates go up with shaving, not down

I do it cuz everybody else is doing it.

And, before you ask, yes, if they jumped off the roof I would too.

I took a sociology class, our prof generally ended up way off topic, he happened to mention this is true. Said he never used it with his kids for that reason.
