Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tossing around trading up from my Allez to a Tarmac Comp Sl2. I want to upgrade the parts on my Allez to force, and that will be about the same price as paying the difference for the Tarmac. MY LBS has a no questions asked return policy, not sure about trading up, though. I assume it would be similar, or if they would give a total refund, which I believe they do, for the Allez and I could pay the difference. Just tossing around the idea right now, but I'm wondering if their lower level carbon would even be worth jumping into.

The Tarmac has Rival, but I'd move the Force FD to it since I purchased it, and it comes with what I believe are better wheels than the Mavic CXP22's on the Allez. I'm assuming it would be considerably lighter as well?

Anyone care to help me hash this out?

Low end carbon is heavier and not as stiff as high end carbon and sometimes not as stiff or light weight as Al. CAAD9/10 framesets are lighter than even some high end carbon frames. Entry level carbon is for the masses to satisfy marketing.

Worst case, that low-end Tarmac is a heavier or negligible weight difference over Allez, and may not have the stiffness for power transfer as the Allez. But you'll have TEH CARBON!

Then again it might be better all around. Find a way to spend some saddle time on both to find out.

What changed? My 10' looks identical besides the paint and I like the 10 sport frame colors better than 11.

The high end Allez is an all new frame for 2011. It is a bit more massive compared to the 2010 model. The top tube for one is much wider, so much so that it is a bit wider than the headtube. As for the headtube, it is now tapered with a 1.5 bearing on the bottom. The downtube has also increased in size. They have dropped carbon rear seat stays in favor for alloy tubes. Compared to the 2010 all alloy Allez the seat stays are now straight and lack the curved design. The seat tube appears to have been hydroformed and has more of a square profile near the bottom bracket. The fork has a tapered alloy taper and sports more of a straight blade design.

According to the dealer manual they tried to mimic the Tarmac with an alloy frame. Similar shapes, same geo, cheaper price.

Aren't the seat stays now aluminum rather than carbon?

If I may.....Even the entry level Tarmac uses the SL2 mold that features a tapered head tube and Specialized's 8r carbon which was some of there best carbon only a few seasons ago. Dont mistakenly think that the low-end Tarmac's frame has anything low end about it.

T-minus 48 hours and counting! The wheels & tires have already arrived and the tires are mounted. The saddle sits, waiting for its new home. On Wednesday, FedEx Ground and UPS are set to deliver the frameset and the rest of the various pieces, including the bar previously backordered from Performance.

Shake-down ride scheduled for Saturday! [Must play down any excitement. As far as my wife is concerned, this is just a spare bike to keep on the trainer this winter -- to make it easier to get in that quick. inclement-weather workout.]

The eagle has landed (except for the handlebar)! Basic assembly tomorrow. Bar, controls and tape Monday night. Shake-down postponed to NEXT Saturday.

Nothing warms up a cold autumn night quite like a new frameset in the house!

+1. Although about the sex thing.......my girlfriend, whom by the way tried out and made the Phila Eagles cheerleader's squad and was a model inticed me one morning to stay in bed and romp around with her.........I declined with a TBC (To be continued) to ride my Sunday morning 30 miles on my new Pedal Force/ 2010 full Force RS2.
I only say the above to mean that if it were a Aluminum bike I would have stayed in bed w/ her.
