Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2011 Trek 2.3

Anybody have one yet? How do you like it? I posted here a few days ago concerning the Sram Apex group on the Specialized Allez Comp. A friend of mine is trying to talk me into getting the Trek 2.3 over the comp. He has a 2010 and loves it. He is 6 states away so I wont be test riding it. Its a couple hundred bucks more than the Comp. Is it worth it? Just looking for a nudge I guess.

105 vs Apex. I'm sure you will see people say test ride both. As well as don't worry about the group, but the frame.

For that price point you may find better deals on 10s.

Bikes: Helix, HonkyTonk, NailTrail

I'd personally lean toward the specialized... w/ 105 ;-)

I'd take the 2.3 over the Allez anyday.
Full 105, decent wheelset, great frameset (I had one).
It consistently rates as best bike or near the top in it's class.

Saddle, bar/tap/stem & brakepads would be the only things you'd need to
upgrade first and that's only "if" you're not happy with the cockpit as is.
Only upgrade the 2.3 would need eventually will be a wheelset with tires.

After that, you'd have to spend thousands to get much better.
Ultimately, whichever fits you best "is" best.
Good luck.

I'm also heavily considering the 2.3 when it becomes available for delivery next Jan or Feb in this area of the PNW.

I don't think you can go wrong with this one from Trek, but, test ride both to ensure you're comfortable with it. I picked up a 2010 Trek 2.1 to use in the south when I go to visit my parents. After test riding a Madone, I was hooked, but, was not willing to spend that much for the carbon ride as nice as it is. The 2 series as very similar geometry to the Madone, but much less in price.

I rode the 2.1 56 miles in the Ironman Branson, and it felt amazing on those climbs up the Ozark Mtns. Even though it's aluminum (and it can be a little bumpy compared to carbon), and my commuter bike, Giant TCX, is aluminum, too, I noticed because of the geometry, just how smooth it felt, maybe due in part to the carbon fork and seatpost.

I'm sold on the 2 series, and plan to pick up the 2.3 for regular road riding. No doubt it will be very light due to the frame and race wheel set. I was surprised at how much of a tank my Giant TCX really is after riding the 2.1 for two weeks in the Ozark hills of Branson.

I'm swooning for Treks again.
I never lost my love for them and definitely for Madones.
I sold my Trek 1.5 (which is the frameset that is sourced for the 2.X Series).
One of my dream builds would be like this except with a 6.X frameset and of course, 10 spd.

[But when I spend that much money on two wheels without a motor, I'm going to test as many brands as possible.]

Well, I thought I was going to be a proud trek 2.3 owner. I walked in to the LBS Trek dealer today with $2000 cash and left with it. Trek doesnt have a single bike that I would have wanted in my size until February of next year. WTF! They have got to be losing out on a lot of money. Is it because they can't keep up with all the 6' 4" people buying 62cm and 64cm 2.3's. I doubt it. I know one thing. the Specialized Allez Comp is available in my size. I just wish I wouldnt have wasted my lunch hour for them to tell me "Sorry dude, can't help ya".

That sucks.

Can't you order it through another dealer and have them ship it to your local LBS?

Hold on...

I ride a 2010 Trek 2.1 and its a great bike. Upgraded the wheelset on it and its weighing in at about 18 pounds with cages and pedals. I was looking to upgrade to carbon but decided on a wheelset instead. I told myself i'll go carbon when i hit 15k miles on this bike.

Smart.

Baby steps...that's the most prudent way to do it.

GEEZ!

I could've told you that if I knew you'd consider a CAAD9!
That's one of the best entry-level bike around!

You just got the Holy Grail of Aluminum frames.
I sold my Trek a few months ago after I bought my CAAD9.
Now, I'm building up my CAAD (Dura Ace, full carbon cockpit, wheelset, etc...).

It's good that you did some comparison shopping/riding.

Congratulations on The CAAD. It's a totally different bike than the Trek.
I love both (and I'm pretty sure a Trek Madone is in my future).

I just got a 2011 Madone 6.7.......... Nicest bike I have ever owned.

'

I came across a guy today on the train who had a 2009 Trek 1.5 just like mine.
Even though I'm happy with my CAAD, I still remember my Trek fondly.

Hey thanks man.
I'm glad I rode the Caad. It feels twice as stiff as the Allez and faster. Seems like every bit of energy I put in the pedals transfers to forward motion. Its comforting to know that I have a really nice frame that I will feel good about upgrading componets/wheelset in the future. I'll get some pics on here tonight hopefully.

Bikes: Trek 2.3 2010 Easton EA 90 SL/Mavic Ksyrium SL wheels

I bought a 2010 Trek 2.3 and love it!! Have ridden nearly 5000 miles on it, including a few sprint tri's. This bike climbs well, descends fast, and can keep up with the best of them, aluminum frame and all. I have ridden with groups where some guys are riding $7000 plus carbon frames and my bike does just fine. I absolutely have nothing bad to say about the bike. When you are ready, just upgrade com ponents to Ultegra and a nice set of wheels and lookout! I would MUCH rather have my 2.3 than a Madone 4 series. For the money, it is a fantastic ride. I have not had any problems with mine and would def buy another Trek (However, they came up with some real CRAP paint schemes for 2011, so i guess I won't be getting another this year). BTW, I bought mine with a triple but quickly upgraded to the compact...compact is much better). Good luck!!!!

I bought a 2011 Trek 2.1 and it is outstanding. I haven't rode a bike in years, but I researched the hell out of everything before dropping cash. My wife bought the female version as well. We racked up 22 miles on our first outing this past Sunday.
