Cycle vacation advice for late fall
I've come across about ten days of free time off work and some cash to spend on a real cycling vacation. I had planned to go to the Lake Como region to get some good riding in, but realized that my passport is about three months expired .
I could wait until I get my passport cleared, but my suspicion is even with an expedited process, I'm looking at a November timeframe. I'm thinking the weather is going to turn there, so now I've started to look to domestic locations.
I'm from the New England which some might argue is already a great destination, but would like to go somewhere warmer with a more consistent climate.
As it turns out, there's quite a deal for post Ironman Kona, HI both in terms of flights and accommodations. I've been getting a mixed bag of reactions from the internets about the quality of riding on the Big Island. Some say many of the roads are treacherous and inhospitable to cycling, with essentially the main drag (Ironman bike leg) being one of the only routes that are well designated. From mapmyride, I don't see a large diversity of rides near the area I want to stay in (more like 100+ mi loops).
Kona seemed like the best option I've got so far and I'm willing to hear what anyone else has to say about their experiences this time of year.
Here's my criteria:
-This 7 day block kicks off race season prep 2011. So lots of zone 1/fun rides of no more than 3-4 hours in duration
-Ideally resort-ish accommodations where I can fuel up on-site (buffets) and recover (massages) and where there's something to do for the other 15 odd hours I'm awake.
-some semblance of a nightlife.
-as I mentioned, decent variety of routes (length, type, scenery?)
-Not completely break the bank (under $1,200 for the week)
Any and all advice super appreciated!!

The weather would be predictably fairly temperate in my region at that time of year.
