Weren't you the guy complaining about people judging? Apparently your own rules don't apply to you.
Like it or not, people judge you on your appearance. If I spot a facial tattoo on a doctor or lawyer I'm looking elsewhere. Same goes for a sleeve. When I see someone sporting a sleeve I immediately think prison (work release possibly) or circus freak. This discussion is not doing much to enlighten me, but you never know. Anything is possible. Yes, actually I have. Even though we technically have a business casual dress code...anyone in management, myself included, wears more formal business attire. Though I am referring to large multi-national corporations not some start-up where everyone goes to work in t-shirts and bleached jeans.
Something tells me that none of these people is sporting a full sleeve. Some repressed humans in this thread....
|
It's permanent. Forever. Just think about it.
|
Huh. I have a tattoo that goes down the back of my neck and no one ever even notices it. Thank goodness I guess.
|
I think not being able to reach upper management depends on your field. My boss and multi-millionaire company owner is covered head to toe (tats on his neck too), but we're in the fashion biz. Half the management i've met in the fashion business have tattoos.
FWIW, if I saw a beautiful woman with a full back tattoo, i'd probably think it was pretty hot...as long as it's done well anyway.. |
Wow some ignorance for sure in this thread. I have a full sleeve and have never had any negative experience except maybe from some conservative nut cases. Anyways here's my tattoo, to bad i look like i've been in prison or a circus freak. lol Lastly im in a "management" position at a very large Honda dealership.

huh?... me, him....him, or me....who are you calling that, him...oh, me....no him...yeah, him...no, me....wait, WHAT? |
to answer the OP, i have gotten some pretty bad road rash on my leg sleeve, not from riding the bike(sliding into 3rd) and it healed up good, just took a long time
i am not allowed to have any tattoos on my hands, fingers, neck above the collar, or head, and must not be offensive. some people look at me weird cause i have "exposed" tattoos, but those judgemental people can kiss my ass, my tattoos dont make me a bad person, they are all tasteful, and i have a very professional career. |

I don't have anything particular bad to say about tattoo's in general, but 99% of them are ridiculously cliche. I just love seeing the business gal on the plane wrestle her bag around and inadvertently flash the tramp stamp. I always think, "That was a good idea, huh honey?"
In my mind, scars>>tattoos |
^^^Haha.....yep.
Now that "everybody is doing it", it's just boring and yet another indication that people are herd animals. |
a female cyclist i know,
with a tech support job, http://www.flickr.com/photos/bennyne...n/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/bennyne...7608479735050/ just think about it before you do, and remember you have to take care of it. she has also crashed a few times, and hers survived her road rash. |

You can probably forget about becoming upper management though....
I have a lot of tattoos, have a great corporate job, and make a decent living. When I have long sleeves on nobody knows any different. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7881160_n.jpg OP - I have 2 sleeves. Here's me (2nd from right) http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7019140_n.jpg I have crashed a few times and you will lose ink. I have a spot on both elbows haha. However, wearing arm coolers (Google: De Soto Arm Coolers) ma help. The bigger issue is the sun and fading. Arm coolers will help with that. However, if you're a perfectionist you may not want to do it hah. Good luck. rob |

speaking of presidents, you should know that more than one has been inked and/or branded by various fraternal and military organizations before being elected. |

Also, it looks like Kelly Osborne has decided get most of her her tats lazered off. Luckily she doesn't have any extensive ones that can't be removed, like a sleeve. Those are perminant. http://omg.yahoo.com/news/kelly-osbo...ttoos/48516?nc |
Since we're posting pics.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...andom/twtt.jpg I've yet to meet anyone else with this as a tattoo. If supporting my heritage makes me a herd animal or a person unworthy to work for you then so be it. I could care less what people think of what I do with my body. P.S. I'll probably only get one other tattoo. It will be the M-Dot when I've earned it. |

So long as people can't tell the difference when it matters, you can do anything you want. If you don't pay attention to the first clues you project to people who don't know you yet, there will sometimes be a price to pay.
One of the other social rules we have (and this is a far stronger one than any regarding tats), is that you need to have teeth. I managed to knock out my teeth twice in one year back when I was in college. The second time, I decided I wasn't going to eff around with fixing something that was going to keep getting broken. If you really want to scare the crap out of people, I recommend doing what I did and walk around without front teeth. That I had a shaved head and liked to wear a sleeveless denim jacket did not help. After a month, I realized I had to do something, so I have fake ones that look better than the real ones ever did. Thankfully, I did not get teeth made of surgical steel which I thought were both functional and cool. Actually, I still think that. But there ain't no way I'd go that route. |
Slowandsteady,
I worked for a medical device company in sales and management, Enterprise as a high level employee, and have held other high end sales jobs with sleeves. No biggy. Most of the places I worked for made us wear long sleeves anyways. I will have to say, neck and hands are job killers. I now own a successful business of my own. I truly think some people that show up to my studio/shop are a bit surprised when they see my arms. A few minutes with me, my knowledge and professionalism supersedes my tatttoos. I have crashed on my left arm. It did lighten up the color a little. No big deal. I am almost 40, so I really don't care. A little embarassed about my weight in this pic but here I am from about a month ago. I won't do my legs (my wife likes them sexy and clean!). ;) http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4132/...dfaa393c_z.jpg |

Just like it is now appropriate for a woman to wear pants when it once not acceptable, it may one day be acceptable to sport inked skin where ever you like in whatever job you like. But that day isn't today. Why do you think the president of the US almost always wears a conservative suit? Does the color grey or blue make him more effective as a president? Or do the American people expect that their leader looks a certain way? |
