Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannondale CAAD10 Ultegra or Rival?

I already know I want a Cannondale CAAD10. Which build would you go with and why?

I like the SRAM build in that it has SRAM components top to bottom. The Ultegra does have Mavic Aksium wheels though. And yes, will be doing local racing on this:>

Im going with the rival, because I like the group a little more. The ultegra has a little nicer wheels.

I just find it surprising that the Ultegra build has Tektro R580 brakes. Is that not a downgrade in specs?

Ooh, they updated their site. Sexyness. I wish they sold it as a frameset.

Yep. But you're supposed to overlook that part.

Rival. Especially for 350 less.

I'm a Shimano kind of guy, but I have to agree with you that of those two, I'd get the full SRAM rig.

But really, besides that, both are different systems.

You should pick by how either feel to you, not by what we prefer.

Either bike is awesome.

I am digging the black with green accents ... wish I could just get the frameset to build up on my own.

Do you have experience or preference on either group? Personally, I would go with that as my deciding factor.

Yes. You find the Ultegra brakes on the Dura Ace build.

I would opt for the Ultegra build. But you need to ride both and see which one feels the best to you.

I'm like most people. I started off on Rival and tend to be biased in that direction. Regardless how small the switching cost is, there still is a switching cost. Same time, I've thrown my chain quite a few times. It could be a SRAM thing.. or that I'm too rough with gear changes, or that my LBS really doesn't know what they are doing. Might go with a chain catcher though. Yes, the CAAD10 is only aluminum.. and yes, I'd prefer it not to get dinged up, at least for a while!

I have decided to go for the Rival build in White. I called my LBS and they said it would not be in stock until Oct 23rd. Oh well, I do have a nice pic of it to gaze at for now.

I picked up the Nov issue of Bicycling Magazine yesterday. They did say 'we discovered that the CAAD10 rode faster for us than other bikes in this price and range'. Heheh, me likes.

Bicycling says a lot of things.

For 350 less, go rival and see if they'll upgrade the wheels for you. I.e. let you trade in the stocks and get something more durable.

I wish the white for the Rival bike was with black accents like the ultegra one, instead of the indigo or whatever.

I find it odd they put Mavic wheels on the Ultegra bike and Shimano wheels on the Rival bike.

In the case of this comparison, I don't like that the Ultegra bike comes with pinned-rim wheels, an FSA crank, and tektro brakes. LAME!

My LBS sold mine to me for $1600 and I swapped the RS10's for Aksiums for another $100. It came in yesterday. I be going to get fitted in about 30 minutes.

Pics soon to follow. :-)

What prices are these two bikes going for?

I live in Canada and prices seem to be quite a bit more expensive plus 13% sales tax hurts

Mavic Aksiums are 250 on competitive cyclist. You could get the SRAM bike AND an extra set of wheels and have some coffee money left over.

I'd go with Rival. It's a lot cheaper and SRAM Rival also weighs less than Ultegra. Plus I kind of prefer SRAM over Shimano, but I wouldn't mind having Shimano. As for wheels, the RS10 are fine for me. I don't weigh much so I don't need bombproof wheels.

What are the weights of the two bikes? I found that the ultegra bike weighs 7600g but no info on the rival bike.
