Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This Saturday, while riding in the Sierra Fall Classic (out of Mammoth Lakes, CA), I hit my all time high of 56.2mph while desending from Sagehen Summit. Altitude was 8,000+, and I was coasting into a quartering headwind on my 1988 Miyata 215ST.

The bike weights about 26-27lbs, I weigh 230lbs, and the air was thin. Gravity had its' way with me...

It looks like I am slowing down...

151mph in a 1978 Porsche Targa around 1980
Mach 2 on the concorde in 1985/1986/1997
154mph in a rented Audi A6 on the Autobahn (1999 was the last time I passed 150+)
In 2003 went 47.4 going downhill at Harriman (Interstate) State Park on a 19.5 lb Seven Alaris
This morning went 44.3 going downhill at Harriman on a 16lb Seven Elium

I think I posted earlier in this thread but I have an update. There is a short 18% hill near my home and before I've hit 46.7mph (twice) on this short stretch without trying hard. Today I was able to do 51.7mph by just staying tucked for a few seconds. I guess I'm more confident on the new bike with 500miles under my belt now.

OK, I have to post two different types of speeds.

On road: 48.8mph downhill, 35mph flat road - Both on 2005 TREK 5000 last weekend.
Off road: 45.2mph on Kamakazi run, gravel fire road, @ Mammoth Mtn. on 1989 Mongoose hardtail mtb. (yes, it was a little scary)

Lets see 41.5 recently drafting a bus on Forbes ave between the cemetery and south braddock ave (42X11X26@145-150RPM) slight grade

46MPH coasting with my wife on our burley rock and roll comming down beechwood to 5th ave. This tandem has an arai drum drag brake.

All time high was 49/50MPH comming down Forbes into Oakland. Not drafting. 52X12X27 @about 155 rpm. 7% grade about 2200 feet long

Here's a related question--- what is your max rpm and how long can you hold it?
