Dude, i remember you have some pretty ridiculous FTP numbers. I mean, Cancellara is gonna hunt for Liège-Bastogne-Liège at 2.4lb/in with those mountain goats at 1.9lb/in. I'd think you, too, can do well against the competition. And as you said, it's about the W/kg, not just the body mass.
Funny though, I was riding alongside a friend who is on the cusp of pro level on one climb - I think he's about 130lbs and was putting out 330W, whereas I was having to do 500W to go the same speed in the same conditions.

I'm 5'9" and 125 I guess I would call myself road skinny, although my upper body has been classified as a skeleton so its not always good.

the problem with this is that metabolism is both catabolic and anabolic at equal rates. So if you can break stuff down super fast do you think the energy just...disappears? No, your body builds yourself up equally as quickly. So no, your metabolism isn't really high otherwise you would be heavier and more muscular.

5'3" and 105 lbs. I weighed 108 almost 4 months ago when I bought my bike and started riding. I didn't start riding for the exercise or to lose weight so I guess I need to start eating a lot more.

That doesn't apply here at all. what I said holds true for people with normal hormone levels. any kind of gland dysfunction is so much more complicated than you just made it out to be and like I said, doesn't apply at all to normal people. You actually made my point for me. People with gland disorders are the exceptions to my statement and normal people with normal hormones have normal metabolic rates.

Psst: this thread is more about making fun of guys who ride bikes and are obsessed with all things weight related. Please don't let anyone here tell you a thing about your height/weight ratio, food intake requirements, or anything else having to do with bicycles, fitness, health or sanity.

Thirdly, no, I did not make your point for you, since you have absolutely no idea what disorders hxpham might have going on - you don't know if he's "normal". Part of my point (though admittedly poorly made, in retrospect) is that thyroid disorders are actually pretty common, could explain what's going on in a person who just thinks they have "high metabolism".
hxpham - please don't take any offence, I think we're sort of talking about an abstract you at this point but seriously, if you really weigh that little at your height, and your caloric intake truly matches your base metabolic needs + whatever you expend in exercise (etc), then it just seems a bit "off". i'm no doctor.

I was basing my comments on the assumption that a majority of us here are 'normal' or well...normal for BF isn't exactly normal but whatever. Regardless: yes, there is a wide variety of medical problems that makes people skinny. I would say it's a bit of a quantum leap to start pointing gland disorder fingers at people just because they're skinny.

In my experience most people who think they have a "high metabolism" just don't eat as much as they think they do. They eat "a lot". Uh huh, so how many calories? Track your intake for a week and be surprised.

this. though unless you have a power meter it's difficult to track output very accurately.

I have a few friends like this. They think because they stuff their mouth one meal a day they have a high metabolism. Really, their one massive meal a day doesn't even cover their daily caloric requirements, not to mention their body is freaking out from only eating once a day, or very little snacks here and there.

On a more serious note I'm skinny, am always skinny and have tracked my calorie and protein intake and they both come out pretty reasonable from what I remember (did it ages back but you've made me curious now so I might do it again).
