Age old subject.... Campy vs Shimano etc, but

Back when I bought my first serious road bike I had a choice between the Cyclone equipped model and the Campy equipped model but other than that the frames were nearly identical.
The shop owner was a serious racer and said that the Campy could not hold a candle to the Mk2 Cyclone for weight or performance and lost a few hundred bucks by not selling me the higher priced bike.
And he was right about the components.

Same thing applies today in that many folks look at the price without knowing squat about the actual parts and the most expensive stuff has to be the best... or get tied to a certain brand.

Bikes: lots... even a Raleigh twenty !!!
Another guy, a tri-athlete, came into the LBS with a Zipp 808 front wheel, I picked it up, it was so light is was like Mithril. Makes my Mavics look silly, but hey....I'm happy, poor yes, but still happy.

Yesterday at my LBS I came in on a conversation between a rich bombastic customer and the shop guys. The rich guy only rides Pro Tour spec bikes which he updates each year
Rich guy: "Phfft, I will never ride Shimano again"
Shop guys: "What will you use?"
Rich guy: "Campy Super Record"
Now I've seen a gadzillion comments on BF about the pros and cons of both, and I raced with Dura Ace, but it got me thinking that most cyclists, except for the Pros and a very few here, know diddly squat about the subject and more importantly know less about how to use either system correctly or maintenance. Both are sensational when used right. IMHO.

When it comes to shifters I wouldn't call either of them sensational. They both work and they both have their pros and cons but SRAM proved that there's room for improvement in shifter design. Now, I'm not saying that SRAM got it all right either. A friend of mine had the SRAM paddle mechanism break off in his hand on a bike that was less than a year old.

I like Red. Campy is great. Shimano is really good. When I was 27, me vs. Botto 27, it would have been "See ya baby." Especially on climbs. Like, "you want to go for climb, I've been doing them since I was 10 years old." On Campagnolo first-year Record. That was 1962.
Anyway, SRAM is great. I got it at $1160
Before it swept TdF, that's the way it goes, you're an early adopter, you get the great price.
You late-comers, you suck it up. You Campy buyers, you never get to buy Tulio's genius product. You were born too late.

The funny thing is that for every 1 BF'er that cares about which group they have there are 10 other people that couldn't really care less what they have. One of my riding buddies runs Mirage triple and knows nothing about sram, shimano, or campy yet is a very strong rider.

Excuse me while I ride my lowly 105 bike.

Bikes: Moots Vamoots, Colnago C60, Santa Cruz Stigmata CC, and too many other bikes I don't ride
Back in the day when I was new to serious cycling I would get asked stuff like, "What block are you running, a 12/21?" I would ignorantly nod my head and mutter, "Yep", and when they started talking about gear inches I would fall to the ground, curl up into a fetal position and whimper.
What intrigues me is that while Campy is sensational, not all things mechanical that come out of Italy are, sure Lambos, Ferraris etc are amazing, but they are so finicky and bad tempered at times. Japanese products on the other hand, may not be as glamorous but have a long record of reliability and durability. German products like the Rohloff IGA are a technological marvel, but is there a German derailleur set up?

I just find the whole Campy vs Shimano vs Sram crap a tad bit stupid.
Those who complain about any one of those probably don't use it properly.
