Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2007 Ultegra vs 2011 Tiagra

Hi All,

I'm new to road cycling and trying to compare new and used bikes within my budget. I've heard that Shimano 'trickle down' their technology from one group set to another over the years. If that is true, how would a 2007 Ultegra compare with a 2011 Tiagra set? (I'm still trying to find out what milage the 2007 set has done...)

Any help much appreciated.

Andy

A 2007 Ultegra group will be better than a 2011 Tiagra. A full Tiagra group will weigh about another pound more than Ultegra. The only benefit would be that the Tiagra is new, but due to its greater use of plastic and lower build quality it wouldn't last for as many miles and Ultegra anyway. The technology doesn't trickle down entirely in Shimano's range.

Welcome aboard Andy.

Current Tiagra is what? 4500 Series?

Is the 2011 Tiagra upgraded?

Maybe 4600 Series?

Edit:
Just googled...
2011 Tiagra is 5600 Series 105. IOW...an excellent group.
Better than 2007 Ultegra? If it's 6600 Series Ultegra, then no.

Is new tiagra 10 speed yet? Honest question. 2007 Ultegra is definitely 10 speed, so that'd be the difference for me.

I bet that's true.

you are still getting exposed shifter cables for the new tiagra, and 9 speed.
go with the 6600 ultegra.
now if you are in budget for the new 105, that might be a better comparison to last generation Ultegra.

I'd go for the Ultegra. The levers may need a squirt of WD40 sometime soon though; they can stop working after a few years when the grease inside gums up. To get a good idea how worn the group is, check for play in the RD's pivots.

The RD is most likely the first bit that would need to be replaced, but you can sometimes remove a bit of play by sticking extra washers inside the pivot assemblies.

I run 9-speed Ultegra on one of my C-X bikes (6500). Lots of years. Lots of miles. Absolutely bomber.

I wouldn't trade it for brand new Tiagra.

On the other hand, if my 9-speed shifter exploded tomorrow, I wouldn't have any particular problem running Tiagra.

I have a tiagra rd since 2006, ridden 12000 miles in all weather. I swapped to 105 rd last month but only due to a crash. The Tiagra rd was still functioning correctly before the crash.

Cant speak of any other tiagra components because that's all the tiagra I had (it was the highest spec component on my bike).

Tiagra = cheap and nasty to half-decent

Ultegra = Shimano's penultimate

Something wrong if Ultegra doesn't outlast Tiagra by a while...
