Don't let your confidence wain- just let your understanding grow- that said -there is hardly a ride I go on that I don't get some feathers ruffled my someones lack off sensitivity

This is why I never, ever draft random people. What's the point? If I set out solo, I have a specific goal in mind, and drafting just diminishes it.
|
To be clear to all, I was not drafting. I caught them on a descent and it wasn't safe to pass so I announced myself and was planning on moving on as soon as it was safe. But your points are all well taken. Ride safe out there and point out the potholes if you see em. :)

OP says he wasn't drafting but it were the case, out of karma, I'd point out any dangerous situation whether the wheelsucker was a friend or an unannounced rider, which can bug me at times.
But on the other hand, I wouldn't have placed myself in that situation. Catching riders from behind on a descent, I would not have pulled up on any unfamiliar rider. I would have waited till it was safe then made my pass from well behind and way wide when it was clear. ;) I do it all the time. There are times that I spot a shady rider on a mountain descent and chose to stay behind rather than risking my safety. :D |
I never point to people I don't know. I don't expect others to point. I think I am a reasonably kind person otherwise. If I were you the split would have been their way of signaling of danger ahead. And in tight pacelines you need to read the person in front of you and react fast.

Almost. I bunny hopped the first pothole only to catch the second one. Basically bucked me up and almost over the bars. I recovered, barely recovered. A runner was right there when it happened and even he thought it was lame of the guys in front.

Sorry, you were wrong. I agree with that others have said, don't follow people you don't know so closely and be responsible for your own safety. When you are riding in a group you have to have some faith in the people you are with and and put some of your safety in their hands. When you encounter random people on the road don't make any assumptions.

You made an assumption that they'd look out for you. That's dangerous. |
On a ride a couple of years ago, a fellow hollered "Clear!" to the cyclist behind him while crossing a road. It wasn't, and she was killed. I don't trust anyone, and I hope no one trusts me. If I were to point out stuff, I'd have a hard time living with myself if I made a serious mistake.
Otherwise, lots of good reasons posted here why the cyclists weren't jerks, imho! |
I don't point out obstacles when I ride, except in rare circumstances, like if I know there's someone behind me, think they probably don't know about the problem and won't see it in time, and I'm not sprinting or winded.
But I don't get on the bike to talk, and I avoid MUPs partly because I don't want to call out "on your left" all the time. I just want to ride along in my blissed out little world. |
Yeah it sucks but if you were on the 101 it could be familiarity. There's a lot of people who commute and train on that route so maybe they figured you already knew about the pothole. I don't point out everything when I ride that route partly because at 27mph things come up quick and with the traffic and people getting in and out of parked cars it's scary to let go of the bars everytime a bump in the road appears. And yeah, don't trust strangers. GL

OP, I hope by now you've realized that you shouldn't expect any common courtesy from anyone on a bike. Actually, after reading through most of this thread, I don’t think I’d expect any common courtesy from most of these folks anytime at all!
That being said, if it were me, I would've alerted you to the potholes, it was just the right thing to do. |

It shouldn't be to hard to see the road ahead when riding behind (not drafting) two other cyclists.

Even just calling it "common courtesy" completely misses the point.

Had an interesting experience today while riding in my new local area of North San Diego County. I am still new to the area and as such don't know all the roads well. Today on my ride down the coast while descending a small grade I caught up with two cyclists. Due to traffic and parked cars I didn't try to pass as it was unsafe and I didn't need to speed by. So here is my beef. I let the riders know I was behind them and made eye contact etc. Once we reached the bottom of the hill both riders split to avoid a giant set of potholes and neither one pointed it out. I ended up almost eating asphalt at 27mph due to a lack of common cycling etiquette. Am I wrong in thinking it was kind of lame on the part of the cyclists up front?
if I were riding with unfamiliar riders, I wouldn't count on them to give me a heads up. I personally would've stayed far enough back to catch the hole myself. I don't trust anybody I don't know. But you're right about there being etiquette that could've of been practiced. I would've if I knew someone was riding behind me and I didn't know them. |
Are you one of those asses that drives/rides so close to other people that you aren't riding with that you can't see the road ahead and can't stop in time if something happens?
