Look, I don’t like folks I don’t know riding up on my ass and drafting or whatever any more than the next guy/gal. But I still have enough sense to not want anyone to get hurt because I felt put out for a few seconds.

Perhaps not everyone calls out potholes? Maybe the riders weren't being discourteous, but just following their norms? Perhaps it's a bit presumptive to think all riders call out typically encountered obstacles such as pot holes, manhole covers, etc.

OP, I hope by now you've realized that you shouldn't expect any common courtesy from anyone on a bike. Actually, after reading through most of this thread, I don’t think I’d expect any common courtesy from most of these folks anytime at all!
That being said, if it were me, I would've alerted you to the potholes, it was just the right thing to do.

If you don't expect "common" courtesy from anyone, then what you're expecting does not seem to be common- you're expecting uncommon courtesy. If I'm driving my car down the freeway, I don't expect people in front of me to point out potholes as they drive. If they do, that's fine, but it's not expected and not common.

Had an interesting experience today while riding in my new local area of North San Diego County. I am still new to the area and as such don't know all the roads well. Today on my ride down the coast while descending a small grade I caught up with two cyclists. Due to traffic and parked cars I didn't try to pass as it was unsafe and I didn't need to speed by. So here is my beef. I let the riders know I was behind them and made eye contact etc. Once we reached the bottom of the hill both riders split to avoid a giant set of potholes and neither one pointed it out. I ended up almost eating asphalt at 27mph due to a lack of common cycling etiquette. Am I wrong in thinking it was kind of lame on the part of the cyclists up front?
Sure, it would be nice, but you aren't entitled to anything other than your own responsibility to protect your front wheel, particularly in your scenario, where you are riding with complete strangers.

So. You're going down a hill pretty fast. All of a sudden a set of potholes comes up. You swerve to avoid them. Now, while you're busy swerving for your life, there might possibly be someone behind you. Do you take a hand off the bars, putting yourself in danger, to warn them? Or are you kind of busy trying not to crash yourself?
