How about last year's Ingested foreign bodies and societal wealth: three year observational study of swallowed coins from a few Harvard profs published in the Dec issue of BMJ. Some highlights:
What this study adds
Children decrease the M0 supply
It is difficult to detect the plausible association between the value of the stock market and the value of coins children ingest
Footnotes
We thank Eric Brynjoffsen, MIT Sloan School of Management, for economic advice on monetary theory and why it is important to pay off your credit card;
Funding: Funding was obtained from the gastrointestinal tracts of our patients. Absolutely no taxpayer money was used for this research.
Competing interests: The desires of the authors to earn Wall Street salaries conflict with their jobs in academic medicine.
Ethical approval: A member of the institutional review board of the Massachusetts General Hospital thoroughly approved of this study.

Because some idiot at the BBC has done exactly what the humourless ones in this thread has done, which is to be too stupid to realise when someone is telling an amusing joke. Unlike here where a post or 2 is made and that's that, the BBC decide to put a full news item about this "serious research" and to add extra spice, bad mouth one of our most promising new bike brands. Well done BBC. Support British business.

I figure in the last six years I've spent $25K on bike crap. That works out to about $350 monthly. On the other hand I'm in phenomenal shape for 53, I'm thin, and I'm quite happy. How many people would pay $350/month for all that?
Plenty.
Is that a waste of money? I can think of far more stupid things to do with money than that, and I've done a few of them in the past.

But... not everyone is in your economic bracket and can't afford to spend $350.00 a month on bike schwag and you know better than anyone else the law of diminishing returns when it comes to the money spent on bicycles.
I know lots of people your age who are thin and happy and manage to do this without spending $350.00 a month on their cycling but still manage to ride rather decent bicycles every day.
The article is funny because it contains a lot of truth in it... lighter bikes have their advantages and do make racers faster, give the poseurs something to go on about, and make old farts feel younger.
