Work sucks

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Work sucks

It's mid Dec and the weather today in northern CO was beautiful. 65 degrees and sunny with just a touch of wind and I'm stuck at work all day and miss it all. Work sucks!

I agree. I miss out on a lot of rides because of work.

what I hate the most in winter is how dark before/after work hours are

True enough. I get home before 5 usually and if it wasn't dark already could go for a ride easily enough.

Very true, but that's the practical, real world response. I was just lamenting the really nice weather today and the fact that I couldn't go out and enjoy it. However, if I didn't have a job I probably wouldn't have the bike either. C'est la vie.

Become a teacher. You'd have 2 or 3 weeks off starting next week.

LOL. I am a teacher, but try 1.5 weeks off. We have a lame calendar. I hope this nice weather hangs around though.

Sounds like you have a longer Summer, then. Next year, we go to the "early start" calendar, which will shorten our Summer by a month and make us start mid August.

The worst part is how well our wonderful "green" passive air conditioning will work when it's 105 degrees outside.

Nope. We start mid August too. They gave students a fall break but it was professional development for us.

Teachers tend to get a lot of flack about summers off and winter break, etc. which isn't entirely fair. Sure we are off but also not paid. It's not like 10 weeks of paid vacation. It's 10 weeks of unemployment without benefits. Meanwhile, our pay is divided over 12 months so schools can invest our salary and earn interest on money we already earned but haven't been paid. Few jobs around like that. Although if we were only paid over 9 months then a lot of us would not plan well for those months.

That's 18 degrees celcius. That's a bit cool.

Not to mention the amount of education required (Here in CA it's BA plus credential plus BTSA to clear the credential, then ongoing PD) to keep this job compared to other jobs in that salary range. Every job has its perks and its downsides, otherwise nobody would take it.

Oh, and we did get paid 10 months for a while before the district started spreading it over 12. I taught year-round without break and then Summer school before the change anyway.

I rode after dark today, fun. I rode lookout mountain at night recently. Got to ride...darkness can't stop me.

Maybe for Sydney, but not for Colorado in Dec. It's also 30F warmer than a typical warm day in winter here.

I have two grad degrees and a professional license. In other fields I'd make a heck of a lot more than I do as a teacher. Not really complaining though. I chose low pay and more time off plus it's a job I enjoy. Others chose more pay and less time off. I'd love more pay and more time off but it beats less pay and less time off.

Yeah, but you live in one of the best biking cities in the US. FC is up there too though so can't really complain. I should probably get some lights and give the night rides a try but it's a hurdle I have to make. Fear of being road kill and all - or hitting a deer on a bike.

What is that you teach? My wife has been pushing me to get my teaching credential so I can teach business classes.

Middle school band. Sometimes it's fun, sometimes it's downright masochistic.
