I ordered a new cassette and light rim strips right after i ordered the system 30s and they arrived today via USPS. they shipped on the same day. not that i really expected them to be here this soon but i didnt the cassette and rim strips either. maybe tomorrow or thursday? will have them for sure by Fri but im off the next 2 days so it would have been nice for them to came today or even tomorrow

I'm sitting at home right now waiting for UPS to deliver my bike, it's driving me crazy having to wait.

M_FactorX19 01-18-11 04:05 PM

Giantdefy very nice bike and wheels!! thanks for the post.

M_FactorX19 01-20-11 11:04 AM

well it looks like my wheels will not be here till tomorrow. i swear UPS takes forever. they had my wheels sitting in IL for 2 days then last night just sent them an hr away from where they were to Chicago IL?? now they are in OH? i have no idea why they would even send them up north before sending them down south? end rant.

ill be glad to get them tommorrow to bad i work the next few days and the weather is going to turn crappy:mad: maybe i will get a chance to ride them next week but it looks like it is going to snow again so i doubt it:mad:

Nerull 01-20-11 11:08 AM

UPS's primary sorting facility is just outside of Chicago.

When I ordered my set, I got it the next day, but then I live an hour and half away from williams cycling. Dont feel so bad, I ordered a Lynskey frame on the first week of December, looks like Ill get it at the end of February. BLAH!

M_FactorX19 01-20-11 11:21 AM

i ordered a new cassette and some light rim tape at the same time and it shipped the same day both from CA. i got the casssette and rim tape day before yesterday sipped via USPS but the wheels wont be here till tomorrow since UPS is slow. i just wish i would have got them while the weather was still decent and i was off work. oh well.

What brand of rim tape?

datlas 01-20-11 01:28 PM

FWIW my Williams 38C's came with rim tape already installed. And quite nicely so, I must say.

i know that they do but it sounded like it was kinda heavy from what ive heard so i picked up some supper light tape to shave some weight.

what brand of tape? Rox ultralight i havent used it before but at 3g pr/pair the weight is good.

M_FactorX19 01-20-11 04:07 PM

not only did my wheels not come today but i went out for a nice climbing ride since the weather was nice today and is going to turn nasty tomorrow and broke my chain half way up a supper steep hill!! yeah it sucked since i didnt have a chain tool with me. i walked my bike the rest of the way up the hill and coasted down the other side where i meet my wife with the car :notamused:. it sucked more because i was having a great ride and felt supper strong today oh well i needed an excuse to buy a new kmc chain anyways. :innocent:

datlas 01-20-11 04:49 PM

Sorry to hear about your chain.

Luckily my legs are so weak the chances of me breaking a chain are pretty much zero.

Oh yeah, back on topic, I don't know what type of rim tape they use, it came pre-installed and no label.

M_FactorX19 01-20-11 05:07 PM

after talking to mr williams about the weight discrepancies i had read about he stated that most people probably weighed them with the installed rim tape and that would add 50g pr/pair and there could be up to another 50g total for the alloy extrusin process. so if thats the case i will save quite a bit with the Rox ulralight tape at 3g pr/pair

i really wanted to get a lighter set of wheels and that was why i tried to get a set of Soul wheels but since that didnt work out i got the system 30s. i plan to get a super light set for the big climbing days later on down the road.

as far as the chain goes yeah it does suck but thats just how it goes sometimes. thats the first chain i have ever broke though and was supprised that one did since it wasnt that old. one of the outer plates just sheered off when i was half way up a big climb and standing out of the saddle. i wasnt changing gears or anything either.

M_FactorX19 01-20-11 07:18 PM

Looks good man ill try to post some pics of mine tomorrow if i have time after work.

need to order a new chain tomorrow but cant decide if i want a KNC XSL or just the X series. is the XSL worth the price? will i break it on the first climb or sprint?

Here bro, here's my 2010 CAAD9-5 with Williams System 30 wheels and Continental GP4000S tires.

You could say it's the BF bike of choice.

Yes. Oh yeah, flip it FTW.

Unfortunately I can't. I had a $250 Retul fit back in June and that's as low as I could get at the time. I've got a few thousand miles since then but everything feels fine. I could flip it and I'd be hurting.

M_FactorX19 01-20-11 07:43 PM

i was going to say the same but the thing is thats not my bike and im sure that it fits you just fine. if it was mine though it would be flipped for sure!

That's ok. I was just being flippant.

It's the BF way.

Accordion 01-20-11 09:30 PM

You know, you've got me thinking now....I still have the original stem and I am WAYYYYY more flexible and lighter now...I think I'll pop it on there tomorrow and give it a try.

M_FactorX19 01-20-11 09:37 PM

why not just flip that stem over? if it were me though and i was trying to get to a more agressive position i would start by removing some spacers. just remove one at a time and ride on it till you feel comfortable then remove another and so on. when you get to the bottom of the stack flip the stem and go back to having spacers underneath and start removing them with the same process untilll you have achieved the body position you are after. doing it slowly like that gives you time to become more flexible over time and to get use to it little by little.

M_FactorX19 01-21-11 09:21 PM

My system 30s showed up today. i just got home so i havent had a chance to mount tires or take any pics but i did weigh them and unfortunately they came in over weight!!

the front weighed 707.5g with the supplied rim tape on and the rear weighed in at 954.5g also with the suppllied rim tape on.

i plan to replace the rim tape with some Rox Ultralight tape and should save 30g or so but im still disapointed they were so heavy. i almost wish i would have got another set of Ksyriums Elites but maybe i will change my mind after i get to ride on them. for a training wheelset i think they will work out ok but i doubt i will race on them or be using them for any big climbs.

the hubs felt really smooth and they were packaged well. i didnt check to see how true they were but ill report on that tomorrow. ill also try to get some pictures up here in a bit as well.

Dude, I know what you are saying but I can't tell you enough to just chill a bit. You're literally talking about 2.8 ounces. Think about that for a second. Less than 3 ounces distributed over TWO wheels - so a whopping 1.4 ounces per wheel. It's neglible. Who cares. You paid less than $500 delivered for the set whereas those Elites would run you more than that and probably STILL come in overweight.

My System 30s roll forever, made my somewhat harsh CAAD9 into a ride-for-four-hours comfort bike and are stiff as hell. I couldn't be happier with them.

Hell, I wouldn't even worry about the nicely-applied rim tape. Leave it and save yourself the bucks and trouble of putting your weight-saving tape on. Mount those puppies and ride like hell.

I didn't take the scale out for mine. I do know that my bike is lighter and it's readily evident just from lifting it. I roll faster and feel better.

Enjoy!

This may not be unusual. When I was looking for a new rear wheel - Record hub, Sapim CX-Rays, Velocity O/c rim - I got a weight of 788g, using the online calculator of a wheel builder's site. When I got the wheel - from a different builder - the weight was 827g. (Both figures are without tape.)

By the time I bought, I'd seen enough posts re wheels coming in heavier than the posted weights that I wasn't disappointed.

M_FactorX19 01-21-11 11:30 PM

im not saying the wheels are junk or anything im just saying im disapointed they were not closer to the claimed weight. i will say this though that after i took off the rim tape that was on it im sure it weighs 50g+ so that will put them pretty close to claimed weight.

on a positive note though i really got a chance to look at the wheels and the finish is very nice, spoke tension was good, and the hubs roll forever. they would even center the hole for the valve when comming to a stop so that shows the bearings are smooth and im sure they will get smoother over time as most wheels do.

by the way i could have got a new set of 2010 Ksyriums Elites for $530 shipped. i already have a set on another bike though so i did want to try something different with this bike. i do think i will like these wheels though and i was not trying to say anythng negative about them just stating the facts. I think its unfair to judge a set of wheels with out ridding them anyways but so far i have been impressed with these wheels and will likely get both sets of my carbon wheels from Williams.

Beaker 01-22-11 12:28 AM

F the rim tape. Here's Beaker's 4 step wheel evaluation plan:

1 put them on your bike
2 ride around for a bit
3 report back to bf on your findings
4 work out if you're happy or not then keep or sell.

Bike of choice is a bit much.

Flip it.
