Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Build Suggestions? 2 new framesets

In the past few weeks i have acquired 2 framesets, almost unintentionally.

I was trying to sell my '09 Felt, but then someone offered to trade me his '09 BMC SLT01. So there's one.
Then, i was helping a friend shop for vintage steel frames on eBay, and i saw an '84 Ciocc Designer 84 for $200. I bid, not expecting to win, but then i did.

I don't know when i'm going to build these, but it's fun to plan out the build. I do not plan on doing a "dream build" for these. Going for efficient and affordable.

For the BMC i was thinking '10 Rival, black Ksyrium Elites, and alloy compact-bend bars.
For the Ciocc, i was thinking '10 Athena, silver Ksyrium Elites, Nitto stem and some traditional "pro bend" bars.

what do you think? how would you build them up?
btw, not looking for a flame war here. just a discussion

This is what the ciocc looks like (except for the paint fade), but it's not mine.

this is the BMC

Bikes: Have two wheels

That's pretty much how I'd do it. It looks like the BMC has an Easton seat post, so you could go for all Easton bits.

IMHO, you can do so much better than ksyrium for wheels. They're fine and sturdy, but overpriced and almost anti-aero; and I find them kind of ugly. Especially on the classic italian frame. For that one, at least, a classic 28h or 32h custom build would be great. I can even think of someone on this board that you could talk to about that.

the ugliness is something i think kind of works for them.
the BMC is all full of weird shapes, it's not aero, looks very industrial.
i thought i'd continue that to the wheels

are you referring to psimet?

Ah come on, Campy C-Record, Open Pro's and a nice Regal/Rolls (for the Ciocc)

for the Ciocc i wanted to do modern components, without getting too flashy. Athena, maybe, since it's all silver aluminum.

I'm a proponent of having all my groupsets use the same freehub. That way I can swap wheels at will. So go Campy on the BMC too!

This makes sense, my other bikes (plural. oh god i am out of control) are all SRAMy. I wanted to keep the italian frame all-italian. And show it to my grandfather who actually grew up in the italian country. (campagnolo means "country")

That Ciocc looks really nice. Don't forget to post pictures when it is done.

This would be very good. Maybe with some open pros and record hubs

Bikes: N-1 where N = number needed

I have a mid 80's Ciocc that I had Ultegra / DA 9 speed on it (the headset it came with was Ultegra). I ended up selling the 9 speed stuff and have gone with a period correct 600/Ultegra 7 speed down tube setup. I think the bike is happier with the old stuff on it.
