Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

GPS Issues

Hi all,

has anyone had any issues with acquiring satellites on the Edge 800?

My flat seems to be in a GPS dead zone in London. I can't get any GPS signal indoors (obviously), but when I go into my back garden to get my bike, the device refuses to move past 2 GPS signal bars. Typically, I only get full signal when I cycle down the road for a bit..
(I should note that this only happens at my flat, if I turn the Garmin on anywhere else it's fine).

Problem is, I'm having trouble starting courses where I live (because I can't get the GPS signal)...

Thanks

Reception is based on visible sky. The more sky you can see the more satellites your GPS can acquire. Satellites are not geo synchronous and move pretty quickly relative to your position. Usually only one or two are near your zenith. Urban environments are not GPS friendly. Generally one unobstructed horizon is a good thing for initial acquisition.
