Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for a helmet around $50

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone ran across any deals on helmets? I'm looking to replace my helmet after a crash and need something around what I had before. What I was using was a Bell Sweep XC. I'm hoping to find something similar for around $50 on sale.

Any help wound be greatly appreciated.

If it matters, I'm an adult male size L head.

My favorite under $50 helmet is still the Bell Alchera, usually on sale at Performance or Nashbar.

Sometimes Costco sells Bell helmets in-store for around $25. With spring approaching, they have them now.

No helmets at Costco right now.

I do like the Bell Alchera that was suggested, and the reviews look good. The Specialized is out of the price range I set (I meant to say my price range was up to $50 at the beginning). I ran across a few that I'd like to point out and maybe get some feedback on.

The Ascent Strada, and a few w/free shipping at PricePoint $30-50 here.

I have the Red/White Bell Lumen. Looks nice and was affordable. I paid about $50 from REI last summer, I'm sure you can find it for the same price online if you shop around.

I was getting ready to put this one on ebay. If interested I'd let it go for $80.00 plus shipping. Comes with cold weather liner. Worn once. Save putting it on Ebay!

If you had only posted that helmet 2 weeks ago I would've gotten it. Matches my bike and it's better than the one i paid more for (Livestrong Saros). Although I do like to show one of the reasons why I'm biking

Performance replaced my Ascent Strada free. I'd recommend it, but first, call Bell and see what their replacement policy is for wrecked helmets. Even a deep discount may make you want to stay with them.

Is there any objective data to compare the level of protection offered by various bicycling helmets? If there is some correlation between the price of a helmet and it's ability to keep the contents of my skull intact, it might have a lot to do with what I'd be willing to spend on one.

If only you could go up to $70, the Scattante Spyder (performancebike.com) is on sale. I had a look at it and it seems damn nice. I currently have a year-old Giro Pneumo that is the first "expensive" helmet I've ever bought, and the ventilation is great. I'll never go back to "cheap". I've been considering the Spyder as a future replacement/backup.

He can't since he doesn't have 50 posts. I think he can still read PMs from others, so PM him your email if you want.
