The things I "learn" from Oprah

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes me too. I hate when you are going down hill and have to push like your going up hill. Wind sucks.

I suppose I should rephrase that. Everyone that *chooses* to ride a bike to work would be naturally happy.

Yeah, it sucks, goddam green everywhere; >70 F every day for the last ten days; haven't seen a bedbug, tick, flea, or mosquito in six months; hundreds of miles of road and trail; there's enough leftwingers to check the conservative ranters, religious right (barely), and racists; the cops are decent (less corrupt than most in CA); there's three Farmer's Markets each week year 'round; there's a lively Arts scene; and if I wanted Mediterranean climate, I'd go there.

On the other hand, thank God decent beer prices are through the roof; there's no discount grocer; good jobs are rare as hen's teeth; property and rents are high as Hell, in fact, everything is through the f'ing roof; the ocean has been ***** by roll nets; and there's snooty Roadies (not really, more like Jr. Snooty).

Best loop? Obviously, the one with all the micro breweries that hand out unlimited free samples!

It was a tongue in cheek response. Not raggin on China. :0

I don't know about free samples, but the SLO Downtown Brew has $1 beers from its microbrewery. They have lots of good varieties.

We need to find a pic atop Prefumo Canyon towards Morro Bay on a clear day....very rewarding view after some good climbing.

Another good thing about SLO (or at least SLO county) is that you can find a lot of rural roads in good condition that are not heavily trafficked. A favorite of mine is a climb over Peachy Canyon Road, which goes over smooth pavement under a canopy of shade trees, and only a few houses and wineries are on it. The other day I think I saw 1 car in about 8 miles of riding.

Somewhere I have some pictures I need to find....

Aha, I was getting the laptop which was in the kitchen with my mom, then I heard "San Luis Obispo" and I was interested since I wanted to go to school there. Then it was a girl touring around, she was riding a bike with a rider from the Cal Poly Wheelmen so then I got even more interested. Then I waited to see if she (Oprah) would say anything about bikes and she did!

My earlier pictures were toward the top of Prefumo, but they were facing toward SLO. As usual, Morro Bay was clouded over that day.

I just rode Peachy last month! I'd been to 2 or 3 (or so) wineries and was coasting down the twisty hill to Paso and came around a corner and there were 50+ wild turkeys moshing in the middle of the road! I whistled, yelled and slammed on my brakes but they weren't moving and ended up brushing into a few of them.

Haha. Yes, that can occasionally happen. I prefer taking Peachy Canyon away from Paso Robles (though its more climbing that way), turn right onto Vineyard, and descend back into town via Adalaida road. 8 or 9 miles of just FLYYING. Keeping up with the motor traffic fast.
