Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why? Helmets are so inexpensive these days, relatively speaking, that it can't be a budget thing.

I was actually going to buy a mountain bike helmet until I got a more expensive bike and then I reasoned, "F it, if I'm going all out, I might as well get a proper helmet - the most important thing for my only brain".

Plus, the Giro Saros feels so good...

It is, but the visors snap off right? If it works for you, perfect. I use the Giro Ionos myself.

What's the design/purpose of the visor? Never done any mtn biking.

On the road, glasses work fine... never had the desire for a visor.

I'd think similar on dirt trails, even more important to have good quality shades for protection from all the lose terrain those in front of you may throw up.

Supposedly to keep branches out of your eyes. IME they also help with rain a bit.

only some models of giro/bell helmets come with the detachable visor.

giro rift is pretty good.
