Four beers a night. Every night. That's why I'm 190lbs instead of 160lbs even though I did almost 1000 miles in January.

Never smoked.

tuxbailey 02-01-11 10:49 AM

Mexican Coca-Cola made with real cane sugar.

dmcdam 02-01-11 10:56 AM

While we're being honest - cigarettes, booze, weed, blow for years - often in excess. Now just down to the occasional night of drinking and a smoke when drunk.

On Sunday, after my ride and yard work, I enjoyed a Hemingway Signature along with a couple St. Bernardus abt12. We made sauteed chicken livers in port wine and seared duck breast with mushroom pan gravy, homemade spaetzle and red cabbage. Drank better than half a bottle of Marlestone. And this is a typical Sunday enjoyed by me and my wife. The rest of the week we eat and drink conservatively and ride and work out.

calamarichris 02-01-11 11:04 AM

Central coast red wines. And sometimes Irish whiskey. And sometimes sea-salt&cracked-pepper kettle chips. (The sodium & potassium taste so good after a long, sweaty ride.)

I woke up one day, looked in my pack, saw three cigs in there and immediately thought "I'll need to stop at the store later".

Then a big booming voice chimed in from the back of my head with "WHY?"

That's a valid question: I don't smoke in my car, don't smoke in my house or garage and I have to walk halfway across the building at work to watch semi-depressed people get their only happiness of the day through the inhalation of carcinogens.

So I quit.

I used to smoke and drink but when I ride I have trouble with keeping my cigarette lit and not spilling my drink.

bassjones 02-01-11 11:14 AM

I enjoy full flavored European and American craft brewed beers, an occasional cigar and I smoke a pipe sometimes. I also dip snuff, but I'm trying to quit that...

rdubbz 02-01-11 11:17 AM

use to smoke. quit long ago. I do love a hoppy ale or though.

Carbon Unit 02-01-11 11:18 AM

I never smoked cigs, but I do like a little Coke once in a while--not the kind that goes up the nose. I do like a cheeseburger and pizza once in a while. Other than that I lead a fairly clean life. Boring isn't it!

Your risk balancing skills need some work. Smoking kills 5 times the number of people that alcohol abuse does.
Moreover, there's pretty solid evidence that moderate use of alcohol can improve your health and longevity.

By contrast, there is no health benefit to any amount of smoking, and even "moderate" smoking increases your chance of an early death.

Not to mention that smoking will make you slower on the bike.

It sounds like he was talking about some very heavy drinking. Which is worse than smoking.

datlas 02-01-11 11:39 AM

Chocolate is mine.

Smoking is disgusting IMO. But hey, it's your body. I hear it might be bad for your cycling too.

ps you might get a better reception in the MTB forum....oh wait, those are the skinny cigarettes....

rangerdavid 02-01-11 11:46 AM

no cigarettes for almost 5 years now. only smoked for 10 years, but damn they are addictive little suckers.

Thanks for your comprehension. I'm not sure what part of 10 funerals in 15 years didn't make it clear. It took me 15 years to wake the eff up. Smoking pales in comparison.

I caught what you were saying. I have yet to hear about one of my friends spending an entire night smoking and then hopping in his car and going 95mph down surface streets and broadsiding a car and killing the occupants or going for a midnight swim in the Pacific and getting pulled out by riptides and drowning or telling the wrong guy "What are YOU looking at?" and getting stabbed 12 times in the chest, etc. etc. etc.

Wait until you start hearing about your friends who are diagnosed with all sorts of cancers, and undergo horrendous "treatments", many of whom will just go ahead and die anyway, leaving alot of "wow! he was such a nice guy!" and "that is so sad, he had young kids" comments. I think you're old enough for this to start fairly soon, if it hasn't already.

Cigerettes kill you very slowly. My brother tells me its like smothering to death.

halfspeed 02-01-11 12:17 PM

Ahhhh that's already been happening to me for years. I come from an old tight-knit farming community and all of my parents' friends smoked although neither of my parents ever did. I saw more oxygen tanks pulled into our house for visits than I care to remember. Every single one of them is gone now. It had a profound effect on me growing up and I never put a cigarette into my mouth.

I still don't judge others who do. They can do whatever they want. And I'm not afraid of a little second hand smoke outside of my building or on a sidewalk or something silly like that. I get way worse than that inhaling the exhaust from cars for two to three hours a day of riding.

Now if you work in a bar and don't smoke and have to inhale the stuff for 8 hours a day I can see your point....

...Oh come on it was obligatory!

Pedal Plebe 02-01-11 12:32 PM

No cigs, no soda, occasional glass of wine.

Sweets are always sooo tempting, must resist!

miwoodar 02-01-11 12:35 PM

Cigarettes suck. I used to drop my MTB buddies so I could sneak a puff before they caught up to me. I quit. You should too and you know it.

If I lined up all of the cigarettes I have smoked in my life end to end...anyone care to guess the answer?
