Quitting alcoholic drinking will certainly have a more dramatic effect than quitting smoking, but make no mistake, smoking will kill you.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
Must be one of the worst death possible. Irritating, annoying and you get to see it coming... slowly, while losing the ability to do anything physical. I was at the hospital last week with a 50yo women diagnosed with that... she didn't even have the right to work in her backyard garden because of it. On the other hand, alcoholism is not in any way better. |
(Just noticed that this thread was revived on 4-20. Ahem.)
My guilty pleasures are grilled sausage and beer. Not unusual to return home from a good, hard ride and head straight to the back yard, beer in hand, and throw a bunch of spicy links on the grill. Eat 'em right from the tongs, still wearing my kit... |

Cigars are cool, but I always burn my arm when I look for cars behind me.

I brew my own beer. mmmm beer

I quit smoking... somewhat thanks to biking. I think I have weak lungs. One cigarette and my ride the next day will suck
|
Coincidentally, this thread is like quitting smoking. You quit for a while, someone offers you one (revives the thread), you take it (read it), and the next thing you know you're saying how you want to quit again (posting in the thread).

lol I'm huge into beer and wine, no smoking for me though.
One of my good friends I ride with drinks and smokes all of the time, its funny to see his weight change so drastically from winter to summer....though his lungs are always terrible |

Not helping with the smoking theme of this thread, coffee has always been my favorite drink. Coffee and cigarettes appear together all the way back to Genesis (third day?) I think.
|
I love coffee. I even roast my own beans - its WAY fresher, you can get better quality stock, and its cheaper.
I may have a glass or red wine once every 2 weeks, and I'll have a good beer once a month if I'm out with friends at a place that servers something interesting. (coors or miller is just not worth the calories). I never smoked. I like the smell of some pipe tobacco, but cigarettes are just nasty. I dont think smokers really completely realize how bad for you they are. My wife just went through nursing school and would occasionally tell me about research she would read about the effects of smoking. There isn't a system in your body that isn't adversely affected by cigarette smoking - heart, vascular system, nervous system, skin, eyes, teeth, urinary system - everything, not to mention all the cancers where cigarettes are the primary cause (lots more than just lung cancer). Maybe its nosy finger-wagging to encourage people to stop smoking, but smoking (and poor diet) put a tremendous burden on the healthcare system - that's something all of us end up paying for. |

I gave up alcohol and drugs in '97. Gave up cigarettes in '99....
Diagnosed with cancer in '09 (just call me Lance). Good time, good times. Still drink too much soda. I try to minimize the absolute crap food I ingest - but I am a weak man. ;) |

EDIT: mymojo: Well done. Have you seen the thread in here about the Tour de Yellow Bracelet? |

I've been a vegetarian for almost 4 years now. I didn't find it hard to give up beef, pork, chicken, and fish, but love my coffee and beer. Don't drink nearly as much as I used to, but enjoy more wine, american craft beer, and my recent new hobby of home brewing. A cigar on occasion as well. Also tend to enjoy junk food from time to time.

I did for years, but gave up after three batches in a row tasted like liquid mushroom.

Now that I'm out of grad school and have a real job (and have to wake up EARLY if I want to get a workout in!), drinking is still an occasional "guilty pleasure" but a less-frequent one. Getting into cycling was the final kick in the ass to quit smoking for good.
The #1 guilty pleasure right now is whipped cream straight out of the can. |

Yup! My goal for this year is to do a Century in October. I thought that would be the right time & reason for me to try to get the bracelet (if its still going around). |
No vices I feel are "guilty" pleasures. No sweets, pies, cakes or cookies. No alcohol or smoke (of any variety). No fat or high glycemic foods. I quit the things I did only to cut the calories and nothing else. Everything I put in my body goes directly to my riding and training and no other conditions or exceptions matter. I cook like a MF'er but everything I prepare is focused on training. I'm very disciplined (and probably boring to most of you, given what I've just read).

On Sunday, after my ride and yard work, I enjoyed a Hemingway Signature along with a couple St. Bernardus abt12. We made sauteed chicken livers in port wine and seared duck breast with mushroom pan gravy, homemade spaetzle and red cabbage. Drank better than half a bottle of Marlestone. And this is a typical Sunday enjoyed by me and my wife. The rest of the week we eat and drink conservatively and ride and work out.
