Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tied and Soldered Spokes

https://www.competitivecyclist.com/pr...paign=Datafeed
Hi, I am thinking of buying these wheels BUT I am concerned about the tied and soldered spokes.
What is the up side and down side of tied and soldered spokes**********?
What do u do when a spoke breaks ?ETC.

Exactly. Also what to do when you need to simply true the wheel.
I say it's best to stick with the basics.

It's highly debated, but track sprinters used to believe it made the wheel stiffer and torsionally (is that a word?) stronger. Despite Steppinthefunk's concerns, the spokes can be individually tightened.

The upsides are stiffness (arguably) and it holds the spokes in place should one break. The only downside is the weight of the wire and solder. I think CC is offering it for nostalgic reasons, though. It's a fad that fizzled out in the 80's.

I usually find articles from the sheldonbrown website interesting and informative, this is just techno crazy talk. so 36 spokes should be pretty strong and is 35 pounds a good on a static model a good representation of really world conditions?

When spokes cross they share the load, this is part of the reason 3 cross (as a spoke runs from the hub to rim it crosses 3 other spokes) wheels are stronger than a 2 cross wheel. Sharing the load is a good thing, that way spokes don't break. By soldering the spokes together, the spokes ability to share 'should' increase.
