Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Heart Monitor Help Pls

I use a Garmin 500 with hr strap. I need some tips to keep the thing working properly in cold or windy weather. I wet it before each ride but in these conditions it seems to lose contact with my body. Any ideas on how to remedy this issue?

What problems in specific are you having? Is it not reading, or is it slipping off, or is it showing excessively high numbers?

You might need to get it wetter. You may also need to tighten the strap. There also gels available that help the contact with your body, if you don't like the idea of pouring water on yourself in the cold weather.

Also you can force the Garmin to look for the HRM. After you've warmed up a bit and are sweating, have the Garmin search for the HRM and see if that solve your problem.

It works fine as long as I am not riding into the cool wind. In the summer it works fine because I have plenty of sweat to keep the contact.

I will tighten the strap first and see how that works.

In cold weather, mine usually takes several minutes to start reading correctly. I don't worry about it that much. But, if you're really concerned about it, you can always stop and wet your chest. Or, without stopping, take a sip, spit it on your hand, and rub it on your chest. Or just don't worry about it.

Which HR strap are you using? The standard or premium? The Premium has know issues with wind, low humidity, static buildup, etc. Just go on Garmin forums and you will find the threads.

I use both straps - the premium for triathlons because it is rated as better water resistance. Are the batteries in the strap good? Weak batteries cna make for poor readings.
