Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just upgraded to a real road bike, what else to do need to buy?

Just got a new bike, a Scattante R-670, this is my second road bike. My first is/was a good ol classic Peugeot (80's something).
Anyways, My question is this, I got a bout $200 to spend on additional items for cycling and i'm wondering what i should get first (already have a helmet, bike shows/pedals, mini toolset):

Im thinking of getting a trip computer/Cateye?
What else will come in handy?

I'm planning to ride at least once a week 20+ miles each time

Hey OP, congrats on the new ride. Like already mentioned.... some good bib shorts, jersey and arm and leg warmers for those cooler mornings. Maybe some toe warmers as well if it's still getting a little cold in the mornings. Some cycling specific sunglasses if you don't have any yet.

Cateye makes pretty simple and nice computers. I have always liked the stem mounting they offer. Just looks cleaner on the bike.

I would suggest a CO2 tire pump and an extra tube and patch kit.

Thanks guys, thanks for the welcome,
I had gotten some Pearl Izumi shorts last year, i think those will work for a long time for me, i spent like $80ish on them, and i have a water bottle and a cage for it.
I donno if i need the warming stuff for riding in CA, its rarely that cold
So seems like I need
1. Cateye - tripcomputer
2. CO2 tire pump and an extra tube and patch kit
3. Jersey
4. Gloves, so gloves are that important?
5. Another cage and bottle

I always ride with gloves (gel filled ones for long rides). If you're getting a bike computer get one that also measures cadence. (preferably wireless - takes 5 minutes to set up instead of next to forever filddling with wires).

This is a good CO2/mini-pump combo, if you want both in one: https://aebike.com/product/genuine-in...u8062-qc30.htm When you buy a spare tube, get one with a long-enough valve to work well with your rim depth (based on the photo of your bike, 48mm should do it).

Also get a master link to keep in your tool kit in case you have a chain problem. Instead of having to master the use of a chain tool, you can just use it to remove the damaged section of chain, leaving two "male" ends that you join with the master link. Since your bike's got a KMC 10-speed chain, the KMC Missing Link 10 would be just right. You can get one from your LBS for $2-$3.

If you ride at dawn, at dusk, or in the dark, then some "be seen" lights are essential. For the rear, I like the Planet Bike SuperFlash. For the front, it depends if you want an off-the-shelf bike light, versus a high-output LED flashlight in a handlebar holder.

I'd definitely pick up a saddle bag along with flat repair components. I just carry C02 and a spare tube, don't deal with patch kits etc. I learned the hard way when i started riding, got a flat while out on a ride and didn't have anything to fix it so i had to call my dad so he can pick me up. Saves a lot of trouble by being able to replace/patch your tube roadside instead of having someone come out to wherever you are and pick you up.

if you can find a local club you can usually get bibs (shirts) and a jersey for about 100. ...plus club fee.

Then if your smart you stop visiting this website because it makes you think that your stuff is never light strong or new enough... and you are constantly reminded that you don't ride a caad10

Get flat-fixin' goodies. I like my Leyzne pump, you'll also need levers, tube(s) and patch kits. To carry them, get either a saddle bag or put them in a bottle/holder.

Since you bought the bike at PB, I recommend you get the membership card for the first year. 10% store credit on everything you buy...and you will be buying a lot of stuff.

1 cage/bottle? If you're in Sacramento, you'll want 2...especially in July/August.

This is one of the reasons im making the list, I have the 10% waiting for me to spend it right now, and i have an incentive program at work that pays you like $20 a month if you work out/exercise that month. Between the two, im planning to spend very little out of pocket

Good. You hold that thought as long as you can.

You'll be disabused of it soon enough...... <Whatever the date, I'll take the "under".>

Cool. One thing I did was get the Forte Titan wheels from PB. They are literally about 1/2 the weight of the Mavics that came with my Felt and they look great. Best $150 I have spent on my bike. Those Shimanos that came with your bike look pretty good. Get some shorts, a jersey and comfortable shoes. Whatever you buy, keep the receipt because PB price matches up to 90 days after the sale. And they are always running sales.

I got my bike and all the absolutely essential items a year ago and felt like I had everything I needed. That feeling lasted less than two weeks.
