can reading these threads lead to obsessive compulsive behavior?
Hi all!
I'm fairly new into road cycling. I bought a used Bauer road bike a couple of years ago to do triathlons with. I've been surfing these threads to research what I should be looking at in the way of a new bike. I intend to get a new bike next year. I've set a goal for myself of being able to consistently average 30mk/hr over a 25-30k route. I've definitely learned a LOT from reading through these threads. The problem is, I find myself spending a lot of time, following up on all the leads, surfing to sites that sell bikes, etc and I'm finding it increasingly difficult to not break down and go out and buy a bike now. I feel I've become obsessed. Is this a bad thing?

It s only a bad thing if you dont want any kind of life outside of cycling, or you dont want an "extra" money laying around, or not having any more sick days at work because you phoned them in for cycling days......you get the point. My racing season is finaly over (live in Iowa short season for most) and i ve only reacquainted myself with my girlfriend. Actualy shes been to all my races, does the early morning driving so i can sleep before the race, brings the dog and takes care of him all day while i ride then helps my bruised ego after most races. BUT now that its all over we have more time to have "nights to ourselves" make dinner for eacother, the usual. Its not compulsive but the more you think about it, the more you end up riding. Good luck and get out while you can!!!

you have the thirst for knowledge, that's good. Just make sure you aren't spending all your time window shopping...

It looks like I'm in a good news/bad new scenario.
The bad news: yeah, I AM addicted.
The good news: I'm not the only one
... if I get to pick my addiction, this is a good one.

Sure it's addictive. But it's a good kind of addiction. One that makes you healthier and stronger. I know what you mean about the overanalyzing part of it. I went through that when I bought my current road bike. But I tend to be a very analytical and obsesive person when it comes to things like this. My boss tells me it's a strength, I'm thorough, and a weakness, analysis paralysis. So the moral of the story is to realize you have this trait and manage it. I will say of all the large purchases in my life I've always felt some buyers remorse. The one acception is my roadie. Everytime I get on it and fly down the road I am glad I bought it! Sure sometimes I think maybe I should have got the Bianchi or the Specialized or whatever. But I only think that when I see somebody elses new shinny new bike, never while I'm riding mine!

the amount of time i think about cycling has now surpased the amount of time i think about sex. wait, maybe they're about equal actually. sometimes i think about both at the same time and that really makes me confused. but if i know one thing for sure: it's that i like sex...and bikes.
