Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Spoke Tension on Mavics

Spoke Tension on a Mavic
Just got my Equipes re-tensioned at the bike store. The tension on the drive side is higher as it should be, but the non-drive side has tension all over the place. Having said that, the wheel is true...........should I take them somewhere else, or ride till I break a spoke??

One possibility is that your rim is inherently not straight anymore. Even spoke tension on a warped rim results in an out-of-true wheel. In that case, pick one: even spoke tensions, or a true wheel. Same concept applies to roundness: if the rim doesn't want to be round, then even spoke tension results in an un-round wheel, so which do you want.

It's also possible the shop did poor work, of course, I'm not ruling that out. Anyway, what I'd watch for is self-loosening non-driveside spokes; if tension's too low and the spoke threads don't have a thread prep that keeps the nipples from loosening, you may eventually have low-tension spokes working themselves loose.
