?? I've got two racks from back in the day that are that design. Doesn't look homemade to me, I'd call it quite usable. All I ever needed for the past 20 years. Add a couple of bungees to keep the bikes from banging into anything and you are good to go.

I'm with you there. This type rack coupled with two bungees to secure things have let me haul a bike around for many many years without any damage to the bike or the car. Not sure the point of this thread.

I still have my rack that looks a bit like that. I used to use it on my 84 Celebrity 2 door, with a CB and police scanner antenna. But have since used that rack on my old minivan, then my Neon. But will likely build a hitch rack to use on my Jeep, to get the bike higher up than any commercially available unit. Just in case I take my Fisher with me when wheeling...

if you look at the pros, all the roof racks on the european team cars are fabricated and not off the shelf.

Wow, if you think a slightly homemade looking bike rack is ridiculous don't ever come to my house.

If you can't make your own bike rack, don't go to Europe.

Wow and I thought the guys that ripped the back seat out of their cars so they could haul their bikes would be accused of the "homemade" lable.

I got one of those screwed to the wall in my basement workshop to hand a bike on. My rack on the truck is fabricated from re-purposed dept store clothing racks, and also doubles to haul a canoe.

Guy told me that a year or so back. Then he had his bike on the rack going down the interstate and it failed...the arm broke, the bike fell off the car at 60+mph and hit a couple of cars behind him, who were then hit by a couple of cars behind them. The insurance company was pleased. Last I heard, the insurance company was attempting to go back against the manufacturer.
A really nice clip on rack with a lifetime warranty is about $150-160. They also have a clip to grab the seat tube to keep the bike from swaying back and forth...banging into the car or the other bike(s).

Bikes go into a truck for inter-stage transport.

Nice! In the days of ready-made, instant, pre-cooked, and pre-assembled, we've lost a little bit of ingenuity. That's really awesome, and love the Bianchis.

I am sure it does. But you are not transporting a professional team's extra bikes. I am sure you will agree that this many bikes plus wheels mounted all over the top of the car would not do real well at 70mph behind a semi.
