Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

9 speed dura ace compatibility question

Hey everyone. So a small groupset (shifters, brakes, derailers, cassette) of dura ace 7700 has fallen into my hands and I'm kinda stuck as to what I need to complete it. For the cranks, am I stuck with the dura ace 7700 octalink option? I can't seem to find any others and my bike already has a dura ace external barring bb. Thanks! -H

If your derailleur is a standard double you will need a stadard double crankset to utilize it, but after that you can use pretty much anything. Even campy.

It is a double. So, even going up to the 10 speed dura ace 7800 crankset would work?

Uh you can ignore the above.

You'll have to use 9sp Shimano for the drivetrain except the crank which can be 9/10 speed, and any modern ShimSRAM rear hub (8/9/10 compatible). A 10sp front dur works but the trimming isn't as effective.

Yes. It will be fine. Check that. It will be superb. The 7800 is a GREAT crankset and a huge improvement over octalink.

Perfect! I was definitely not into the idea of going the octalink route.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I have a 7700 gruppo and it works just fine with a 7800 front derailleur. I also switched to this cranket and it works great.

This whole drivetrain is butter and the crankset is essentially an Ultegra crankset. Trust me, just get it and enjoy.
