Alternative to Cycling?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Make the assumption that end of riding means you are physically unable to do so. Wheelchair racing.

Yachting.
The important question would be, "Will there be booze on board while you are Yachting?".

If not, then make sure to bring along 3 violin players to entertain while your boat sinks to the bottom of the ocean of lameness.

So then.. it will be "Yachting with Booze and girls with BIG BOUNCY BOOBIES."

There.. fixed it for you Rowan.

Odd that people here think that an end to cycling comes from the rider's injury or death.

There are some I know of for whom choice of a relationship/family or cycling has meant riding a bike has become a memory. Likewise, some have had to choose between a job and cycling.

Maybe the young 'uns haven't faced those choices in their lives yet. But... they will.

Yes, yachting taught me how to drink well!

You can keep the girls, though.

Yes this. Otherwise all forms of snow sport - been getting a little burnt with snowboarding this year (though it's been an epic one for Tahoe!) but skiing has made a huge comeback in my life this year! Next year I intend to telemark to open up the world of multi-day backcountry ski excursions.

Besides cycling, I lift weights which I like as much as cycling. Before I started cycling, I had a rowing machine at home. It is a great workout but it is as boring as a trainer except you can't watch TV while you are doing it.

I would probably swim more if I couldn't cycle.

Bikes: Some bikes. Hell, they're all the same, ain't they?

Spending money on the car and continuing with other ways to work out.

Conventional cycling is out ... Well, let's look at the reasons why that might be, and consider the options:
  • Heart disease or some other condition that prevents exertion: That is a bit of a show stopper isn't it! It would also put paid to the alternatives that I'd suggest. The answer there is to see the best doctors and try to get yourself sorted out. With their help, slowly get back into cycling again.
  • Fear of traffic: get yourself a mountain bike and ride offroad. Or find quieter roads. Do a confidence-building cycle skills course.
  • A balance problem: Buy a recumbent tricycle!
  • Blindness: Find yourself a willing sighted cycling partner and buy a tandem.
  • Legs don't work: If you are paralysed from the waist down, or have such major leg problems that they can't power a bike, I have the answer for you - buy a hand-cranked recumbent tricycle. I was at the top of Fleet Moss once, a huge hill in the Yorkshire Dales whose slopes are a severe 20+%. I was standing admiring the view when I spotted some recumbent bikes coming up from far below me. As they got closer, I saw that it was a group of men with huge arms powering hand-cranked trikes. Very impressive!
