Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Here's a picture I took on the Santa Monica Pier in the summer of 1989. Love that huge backpack and old school helmet!

I don't know, other than the helmet, that could have been taken yesterday for all I know. There's amazingly little to date it and I still see people using those helmets!

Very few cyclists wore helmets back then. It was always a stand out item whenever I saw one. I avoided wearing a helmet until 2007!

I guess it depended on where you live and who you rode with, I had that helmet in blue / white and wore it all the time.

Yes and no. This was in '89, so while the carousel is still in that spot, the ferris wheel has since been relocated a few hundred feet west after the pier was rebuilt from storm damage in '88.

1988 was my first year in SoCal, having moved there with nothing in early winter. Within a few months, I pulled a yellow Peugeot from the trash and restored it, then rode it for 4 years until stolen by tweakers. Almost all of my photos from that period of time were taken while out riding.

Here's some more.

Along the beach path.

When Venice Beach still had some glamor (before the Promenade was built).

A hot summer day.

Guerrilla filming.

Palm tree lined street in Beverly Hills.

Hollywood.

Nice pics. Thanks for posting.

That first one looks kind of like my commuting getup from the early 1990s.

I had a blue and white helmet. Only the helmet wasn't the thing colored, it had a helmet cover.

Mr. Vintage, enlarged. Looks like a nice bike. Plenty of seat to bar drop, and Pcad approves of his socks. Mottled red/yellow bar tape?
