You really have to be at a high level to probably get any usefulness of many of these bikes in a competitive environment...IMHO.

It mostly the rider, not the bike. In a highly competitive environment it might make a difference.

i want to see Lewis Hamilton ride this...

ravenmore 03-18-11 12:01 PM

Reminds me of an existing Alchemy bike. Need to find a pic. I saw the Alchemy in person last night. Smokin hot.

Velonews reports more than 1 minute improvement in a 40K. Using their data, aero frames are at least as benefical and 50mm aero wheels.

I assume Specialized wouldn't have come out with a new bike that wasn't quicker than anything out there already.

It looks nice and has great marketing like most high end bikes.

The question raised about aero benefit with a water bottle and legs is really a good question?

Is the whole concept aero design of bikes beneficial or is it just marketing? Most of us don't wear a aero helmet so why aero bike? I think anyone that shows up one a group ride with a aero helmet is a true Fred poseur, can the same be said of a aero bike?

fixed

dstrong 03-18-11 12:42 PM

I bet this is the best bike that will ever be made!

Specialized priced the SRAM at $8,800 and DI2 at $9,200. Frameset alone is $3,800. I think those are the correct numbers from what I saw ealier in their website.

That price is misleading compared to the specs, including weight. The specs are for a limited edition, higher end ("Maclaren" special). It goes for $8000 for frame and fork. The $3800 frameset will weigh substantially more. This is similar to what Cervelo did with their R5 and R5ca.

There's no point in spending $4000 to save 100 grams on the frame, you could save 2 kilos off the bike with that much money.

The standard S-Works frame will weigh sub 950 grams with the McLaren 15% less than that.

Steve90068 03-18-11 02:37 PM

I'll wait a few years until this frame trickles down into a $2000 complete bike just like every specialized does

It looks awesome, but if I were to pay that much I'd probably go with the Cervelo R5ca, because it's more beautifuler.

I love when things are more beautifuler.

Uh, no.

kstryapko 03-18-11 03:53 PM

quite damper

sqharaway 03-18-11 04:03 PM

Not crazy about it. I'd take an S-Works Tarmac over it any day...

simonaway427 03-18-11 05:04 PM

No "mclaren" version on the specialized website.....just Crux-esque paintjobs....boo.

ADSR 03-18-11 05:28 PM

I don't think I can afford it. :(

lol, go to your local book store and look for a magazine titled "race car engineering". Most of the articles have to do with materials engineering and aerodynamics in world class racing i.e. F1.

If there is anybody on this planet that is not only going to know more about both subjects, but also have the resources (i.e. supercomputing) to squeeze every last bit (it's their job) out of a dynamic system it's going to be McLaren's F1 team.

Balancing aerodynamics, structural response, weight, manufacturability and manipulating an anisotropic material is NOT trivial.

Agreed. From one thing I read, some of the biggest differences came in McLaren just knowing how to do advanced design and manufacturing to make the things. They apparently saved more than an entire layer of lay-up with McLaren's methods, a pretty impressive improvement over something that was already pretty advanced.

M_FactorX19 03-18-11 10:27 PM

looks like a nice bike would love to ride one.

Nothing like a non-existent, comparative adjective to slice right through wearied phraseology and delight the ironically astute. I'm glad somebody noticed.

Unrelated: The Steelers' yellow helmets are the coolest retro uniform piece in football.
