Advice on selling my bike
I have a 2007 Specialized Allez Comp which I now realize is too small for me. I'd like to post it locally on Craigslist but I'm unsure of the value of the bike and how much I should list it for. It's a 56cm, all 105 components, about 2000 miles total, Strata cadence computer and is probably an 8 of 10 condition. No structural damage or major scratches. The stock crank was upgraded to a 105 compact and the rear cassette was upgraded to a Sram 11/28t about 300 miles ago. I'm looking for ideas on the value of the bike so I can get it listed.

Throw the stick!!!!
Best thing to do is search ebay for completed auctions. The "upgrades" will not increase the value enough to worry about, if at all, so just look at stock bikes.

Around 500, 6 if you're lucky.
How much did you pay for it new? The highest end model Allex retails for 1400 (2011), so I'd say 500 to 600 is a reasonable estimate to what you might expect to take it.
I dont know where you're from but local orange county CL has a ton of bikes for sale, I searched Allez and this is what came up.....maybe compare those bikes to yours for a better idea on what you should be asking.....lol then always add at least 50$ to leave room for negotiations.

It is a hassle packing and shipping a bike but not that expensive by Fed Ex Ground. I always make more money on Ebay sales though. The volumn of buyers is much larger - you are virtually assured of getting the market price. This is also the perfect time of year to sell it. I have gotten bike boxes from my LBS especially this time of year when they are getting new bikes in for sale.

Figure out what the same bike is being sold for on EBay and Craigslist than add $100-200 to that as an asking price. Clean it up and describe every component like it's the bomb. New grip tape is "custom tape". Use technical terms as much as possible to make things sound really whizz-bang. Take really good pictures (no cell-phone pics). That's just basic advertising.

I recently just sold both of my bikes on CL. My first posting resulted in zero emails until I took the time to take high res pictures of my bikes in decent lighting. I posted about 8 pics of each bike in the CL ad and was inundated with emails the day I re-listed the ad. Both of them sold within a week of the posting.
Good luck with your posting, if you don't get any hits, throw more details in the ad and include a ton of pictures.

I recently sold my wife's Roubaix on craigslist. It took a few weeks, but it sold.
Here are the things I found:
- Posting things on Craigslist later in the week - Thursday, Friday or Saturday, is more effective than on Monday. People tend to not have time to meet during the week and forget by the time the weekend rolls around.
- Post a price higher than what you want. People will low ball you. I wanted to get $1,000 for her bike, and Iposted it for $1,100. I sold it for $950 - getting rid of it was more important than waiting for another $50. Be ready to haggle and accept less than $750.
- Replacing things that wear out is huge, such as new bar tape, chain, cables, housing, tires and tubes. I got deals on all that stuff - Walmart actually sells some of it for a lot less than your LBS - and it makes the bicycle stand out and seem much newer than it is.
- Clean it up good, so it looks shiny and new.
- And I believe pictures do help.

I have sold two bikes on Craigslist in the last year. I would place an ad for $800.00 or Best Offer and go from there.
