can anyone recommend some plain black short-sleeve jerseys?

i'm aware of the Pearl Izumi Elite & the Capo Padrone right now.

Note, I do not care about whether it's reflective or day-glo.
looking for black, just black, black black black.

I have an old Specialized jersey that I like a lot, at least when the weather is cool.

Must recommend Torm, again - the T3 comes in all black, with the exception of a white strip with reflective elements over the back pockets - http://www.torm.cc/t3.html. If you can live with that patch of white, it's an utterly fantastic SportWool jersey.

:rolleyes: As if Rapha has exclusive rights to an understated look. Yes, I'm aware of the (settled) lawsuit, but at the same time, I can have 3 Torms to your 1 Rapha. While I haven't owned a Rapha, I've handled them and I can tell you that the Torms leave nothing to be desired, so unless Rapha is payin' me to sport their gear...

it's a Pearl Izumi Elite, size Large.
I'm guessing it's too big, particularly bc of how much it bunches in front. I'm a little bit bigger in the waist than i guess i could be, so i'm inbetween sizes. some weight will come off as i get more riding in this summer.

The SportWool fabric is fantastic. It's listed at 170 gsm, but it feels a little heavier. I was a little concerned about the revised back pocket area (a lawsuit concession with Rapha, I expect), but it looks good in person.

Size is exactly what I would expect - I'm 6' tall with broad shoulders and I wear a 44 suit jacket, the XL is slim, but not tight, and the length is good. Unfortunately, XL is the largest I've seen on the site, so if you're bigger than me, it's probably a no-go.

Pricing - the prices listed on the site include VAT(?). When you create an account with a shipping address outside of the UK (and you're logged in), the listed prices will lower to reflect the fact that you don't have to pay VAT. For instance, the short sleeve jerseys go from £45 to £37.50. Shipping is weight based and is a better value if you buy multiple items - shipping for my single jersey was about $11, adding an item or two doesn't greatly increase the shipping charge, so I'll have to throw in some arm warmers or base layer, next time.

So, uh, yeah - there you have it. Give them some serious consideration the next time you need a jersey - I know that I'll have a couple more before too long (their long sleeve jerseys seem like an even better value, to me - if there were a couple months of winter left, I'd order one immediately).

It's become my go-to - I like it alot-alot.

Castelli always has some plain color, including black, jerseys. They aren't vanity sized, though.

Yeah, I read that before I placed my order, too.

I'll let others chime in, but I always get that kind of bunching with full-zip jerseys (except with an EW&R piece - it has a dual zip, if I unzip from the bottom to my hips, it doesn't bunch).

Uh, not for an experienced eye. In terms of quality, craftsmanship and materials, they're on par. Wearing one while riding would tell me differences in fit, which is going to be unique to the individual. Will I buy some Rapha? Yes, but not if Torm has an answer to the product in question.

Don't know if you're looking for pitch black but Twinsix does their dark line, these are my favorite jersey. Granted they are expensive I support the home town heroes. Plus the quality is amazing and fit is usually right on.

MEC sells plain coloured jerseys w/ a slim fit. They're also quite cheap.

black is the worst shade you can wear cycling. not only is it hot in the sun, its too cool in the cold and nobody can see you in the dark.

The Rapha Pro Team jersey uses something called ColdBlack in the material:

"A lightweight, high-performance race jersey cut for an aggressive position on the bike. ColdBlack is made by the Swiss textile company Schoeller who are known for their innovative products like 3XDry. Their textiles are tough and have kept me dry during a number of rock/ice climbing adventures.

"Most black clothing absorbs 90 percent of the sun’s heat, but black fabrics that have been treated with Schoeller’s Coldblack technology during the dying process actually reflect 80 percent of heat rays (nearly as much as white fabrics) while also offering UPF 30+ protection against harmful ultraviolet rays. The company keeps the technology a closely guarded secret, but the results speak for themselves: Temperature tests at independent labs found that a Coldblack-treated shirt held under infrared lamps stayed 10°F cooler on the interior and 22° cooler on the surface than a regular shirt. Expect to see Coldblack popping up soon in apparel like black Mammut Champ and Westcomb Talus mountaineering pants."

WRT being seen in the dark, I'd wear a reflective vest and a bunch of blinkies anyway. However, I don't ride in the dark.
