Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Those are the breaks.

This AM I am three miles into my drizzle ride when the chain on the Ibis friggin snaps. No, I don't carry a chain tool (or a jaws of life for that matter). Hey, this chain snap crap happens about once every 3-4 years. Normally this would be a call the cab moment (thank God for cell phones, back in the Day it would have been a walk a half mile in your bike shoes to a pay phone moment). Mrs. Pcad was home, I got her to throw the Cervelo in the back of my truck and scoot out so I could switch bikes. Which took about 20-25 mins, but she kindly accommodated my bike weenie needs.

So it was just like Cadel's bike swap @ the Giro, only on flatter terrain, far more Fredly, and it did not cost me a Grand Tour GC podium spot. I continued my ride on the S2 and got 25 miles in. Mission accomplished.

Some kind good samaritan sees me sitting on the road side, pulls over and asks me if I was OK. I smiled and told him the Pcad Team Car was on its way : ).

I'll have to look into getting a team car this season. Long story short, the wife won't be around. Now to figure out what to do with the brand spanking new S2 that I bought her that is now just sitting in my den.

Timely post as the link on the outside of my Shimano chain (DA) broke. I noticed the noise, but did not find the break until I got home. I was lucky as I mashed up some nice hills that would have sent me tumbling. I am sure mine is due to all the winter riding and corrosion from the chemicals.

I was just recently on a brevet, and one of the riders came in late from doing his 300k brevet, which was pretty much a solo ride. Turns out, he broke a chain, but just happened to have a chain tool and link with him. Be prepared.

I don't think I'll ever carry a chain tool. Maybe if I was in the woods all the time.

I got 2 bikes into a cabs trunk like a year and a half ago. I think I took off all wheels and might have dropped a saddle. There were also wheels in the back see with me. FYI the bikes were a 58 and I think a 54.

If I called my wife with that kinda sob story, she'd say "nice day for a walk, huh?" Big boys should be able to take care of themselves. Get a chain tool. Small, cheap, and indispensable when you need one.
